This is quite entertaining.

But seriously...
Get it together and stop blaming your teachers! Or perhaps you are incapable of getting it together and will just keep going on with this bs.

FINE!

+pissed+ 😡

THINK WHAT U WANT!

I agree that you have to learn to walk first. These basic science courses are really important because they're the basis of everything else. I'd retake all of the classes where you got a D. Since you're having so much trouble, is it possible to become a part time student and lower your course load? Then try to really focus on the FEWER classes that you will be taking.

Silver_eyes,

You have two years, summers, and winters to improve your GPA.

You show strength and motivation, most pre-meds would have dropped their aspirations to become a doctor already. You have the strength to move on, you've made it this far, sure you've stumbled along the way but who hasn't?

Think of it this way:

What is one of the hardest things to do in life? It's to learn to walk. As a baby, we fell on our arses countless numbers of time, we cried, we bruised, and we ached. But look at us now....we're walking!!

My point is, okay, so you're having a lil difficulty but if you keep VISUALIZING YOUR GOAL, you will succeed. You have time to improve, you have options in life, if you want to become a physician, you WILL become it. There is more than one way to approach your goals.

Re-evaluate your studying habits, ask your school counselor if they have programs to help you improve your studying habits, get tutors...etc. For every door that is closed, another door is opened.

Getting into medical school is all about attitude...so believe in yourself and your abilities as a person, student, and as silver_eyes.

ohh boo hoo, i wonder what the undergrads at harvard are going thru.

my cousin goes to harvard as an undergrad (she's a junior), she has to work her ass off... that explains why i haven't seen her for a looooooooooooooooooong time!

It takes a special type of person to even dream of a career in medicine and it takes hard work and commitment to make it to medical school.

I find it hysterical that silver_eyes uses this as her signature after every single post. Silver, you should really read that statement and take it to heart.

I'm cracking up - God what a good laugh.

silver eyes i thought you were going to stop posting on sdn like 50 posts ago. if you say something follow it cause you lose credibility if u dont follow it. this thread keeps going just cause we are bashing someone, and on behalf of most people LEAVE this thread alone cause by you replying to the responses just makes more people respond back (DONT respond to my post).
silver eyes good luck in school and in life.

I am really curious to know what the physics professor did to make him seem racist. PM me if you don't feel comfy writing it here. I did have the same exact physics professor as you and I have nothing but good things to say about him. I knew a lot of Indians, Pakistanians, chinese, caucasions, all kinds of races that were in his class. As far as I know, no one was judged on their skin color. He seemed like a very nice man to me and always gave people a chance to increase their scores. What about all those free points you get for attending class and taking a quiz????
Does he not do that anymore?
I know what you mean by some professors not being able to teach well. However, if this is the case, you need to go in for office hours, find a tutor, or learn on your own through the book. Believe me, I had many many professors that did not know how to teach at UOP, but I made it through. We had many of the same professors and although I did not like some of them, I know that when I recieved C's in some classes, it was my own fault, and not someone else's.
When I first started undergrad, I blamed the professors, but learned over time that your grade is really up to you. The work you put into the class will reflect the grade. Anyone can go to medical school if they really want to! You just need to find the study skills that work for you.
I agree with a post from another SDN member---perhaps taking a year off and improving your math skills may benifit you. I have said this to you before, but you were not happy with it----leave UOP and go somewhere else. I know you do not like this idea, but sometimes you have to do things you do not like in order to achieve a goal. The last thing I ever wanted to do was attend Graduate school. However, I really really wanted to be a dentist and knew this was the only way. I am almost done with grad school now and I find it as a blessing that I had the opportunity to grow, mature, and become independent rather than rush off to professional school. I think if you take a year off you can reflect on many many things (including yourself as a person and how you can improve) and in the end, be glad you took that break! If you think the professors at UOP do not know how to teach than it's best to leave the school and find another that suits your needs.
I'm sorry this post is not as cheery as you had hoped, but I really do hope you get into medical school and I wanted to be honest.
I still believe you can make it!!!!

Give silver_eyes the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she is just laying the groundwork to file a copyright infringement suit against National Lampoon if they come out with a film satirizing college pre-med wannabes.

No hard feelings I hope. I did call you a bitch and actually I meant it. You need some tough love to get you going on the right path. I'm not ever gonna stroke anyone's ego if they don't deserve it. Bust your ass and get it in gear and you'll do fine.

Glad you took the advice and re-read your posts to get the reality check you needed. Now make us all eat it.

Hello everyone
Silver_eyes: your story reminds me of my undergrad college years...at one point, I was working 20 hrs/wk, took 19 credits that semester and messed up my pre-med committee application by turning in my personal statement LAAAAAAAATE. The result: I did ok that semester in terms of my grades. but my pre-med advisor would NOT accept my statement or my application and turned it down. I took the MCAT's, didn't do so well, and applied anyway to a bunch of schools without the letter and ended up getting waitlisted at GW that year. Anyway, I took her advice, moved to Virginia, took a bunch of classes, did research at NIH, tok a year off and retook the MCATs and TURNED IN EVERYTHING EARRRRRRRRRRRRLY THIS time around and applied with the committee letter. Its Dec 31 today and I have 2 acceptances and 2 waitlists. My grades are not spectacular (3.4 overall, 3.5 science and 27R MCAT) but this just goes to show that YOU HAVE TO BE ON TOP OF YOUR STUFF! Med school and the whole application process is more about persistence and organization than anything else. If you REALLY REALLY want it, you will get it no matter what, but since you mentioned the desi factor, I'lll say this: karma is derived from the sanskrit word "kir" which literally means ACTION, the whole point being that
karma is all about TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS
so you can bring up your grades starting now. Trust me, schools always look at UPWARD TRENDS! this being said I am gonna start med school at MCV this fall, I cannot tell you all how happy I am 🙂 🙂 🙂
NEVER Give up and good luck 🙂

DrLady,
All the accolades go to silver_eyes. She does the hard work of providing the material. All good comedy is based on tragedy. Coming up with true to life original material is the tough part. The rest is a cake walk.

hey tryingagain,

thanks again. i know u meant it. i deserved it. seriously needed a reailty check. if i keep on complaing and hwining about my grades and not do anything about it, there is no use for it. whining will not make me go further..i have to take action. even if it does take me an extra year of college.

OH i have a question, uop is a 4-year private. i called stanford med and uc davis med to ask them i fi have to take all of my science/math and non-science classes (humanities, etc) at my home school. both of them said no. i havent took ochem yet, cause i couldnt. will take it thsi summer at a JC. In order to count it towards my major (bio) do i have to take it at a 4 year uni like a csu? Thanks again.

Most med schools won't care, but the school granting your degree probably does. So, that is a question for your UOP advisor - most schools have policies about what they will accept for credit towards a major from outside institutions once you are enrolled at their school.

for example, I know at my ugrad, once you are in the bio major at , NONE of your required major courses, even lower division, can be done at another institution. So that would mean not only no lower div bio, but no physics, calculus, gchem, ochem, etc. I don't know if they have a policy on breadth requirements done elsewhere.

I agree that we can be an anal bunch on this message board! With that said, I'm going to be anal also.

It's not to insult anyone, it's just that so many times posters say that people from India or Pakistan are of a different race than Caucasians (as was said in this thread...that they are a different race than the "white professors").

Not all "whites" (or "light-skinned people") are Caucasian and not all Caucasians are "white"...they can be "people of color" as well.

Of the 3 races (Asian, Black-African, Caucasian), skin color does not necessarily determine one's race.

There are light-skinned CAUCASIANS:
Europeans, Russians...

and

dark-skinned CAUCASIANS ("people of color"):
People from North Africa and the Middle East (Libyans, Morrocans, Egyptians, Palestinians, Syrians, etc...), people from Western Asia (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc...) and people from India.

And there are light-skinned ASIANS:
northern Chinese, Koreans, Mongolians, North American native Indians/Eskimos/Aleutians...

and

dark-skinned ASIANS ("people of color"):
South East Asians (Vietnamese, Thailand, etc...), South American/Central American/Caribbean/Mexican indigenous native Indians, Polynesians (natives of Tahiti, Samoa, Hawaii, etc...).

{{ P.S. Silver Eyes - Don't give up! I think it sounds like you're on the right track now. I know you'll succeed....best of luck to you! 😉 }}

INeedAdvice,

You need to stop getting offended anytime someone uses the term Caucasian to refer to a white person. You already went off on me in the MMEP thread and now you're using the same argument against T-rex. Try looking up the defnition of the word caucasian on Merriam-Webster. You'll find that one of the defititions refers to someone of white skin. Ergo, it's not inappropriate to use this reference.

Don't ever do it, by the way. That was the worst 2 months of my life.

Silver_eyes and others interested in going to med school.

The global economy has arrived and getting into med school is just going to get more competitive in the USA. Thanks to the internet, folks are better informed and the serious MD wannabes are hitting the ground running. They study hard from day one and they get involved in med related ec's real soon. This phenomenon is happening across the board in the big 4 professional programs (physician, dentist, laywer, & pharamcy). I am close to three folks who are now in dental school and law school. Thay all wonder if they could have been competitive at their respective schools for this years entering class. The truth is, most people are not ready to get serious about their future coming right out of high school. Given today's competitive economy, it is my opinion that such people shoot themselves in the foot going straight to college with intentions of competing for entrance into such programs as medical school. They would be much better off going into the military, missionary work, or just working at hit and miss jobs until they are ready to go for their goals with all out dedication.

Why?
Just curious...

silver eyes,

Plenty of people on this board want to help you.

The best way we can help you now is to ask you to keep thinking about your career goals. Quite honestly, medical school is not in your future unless you morph into a new person.

Based on some of your posts (such as "I KNOW I want to become a doctor. I just do..."), it's clear that you haven't been thinking realistically.

Although you're clearly interested in some of the qualities of medicine, you're not headed on the right track. Retaking your courses, blaming professors, and taking o-chem at another school over the summer will not save you. Let me repeat that. Taking organic over the summer will not save you.

You need to really look inside and realistically set up some goals for yourself.

Give up being pre-med for now. Focus on other things. Maybe you'll come back to it someday, and maybe you won't. If you don't give it up now, you'll only end up with a world of disappointment.

I'm really not trying to be a jerk, so don't flame me. I'm honestly trying to help you out here, so please give this some thought.

"Faith without works is dead." James ?:?...... Somewhat out of context but still applicable.

Nothing is either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

i appreacite ur guys advice, but i am NOT going to give up pre-med. that means, the world has beaten me. There is nothing that is going to come in between me and becoming a doctor...nothing. I am not taking ochem in the summer to as u say "save myself". i have to take it no matter what or els ei will get behind. i couldnt take it this year cause i didnt have enough time and i had too mnany units.
