Hello everyone,
i know this question of mine is sort of nonsense but i want to ask for your opinion anyway.
I am taking courses to fulfill my premed prerequisite right now because i know that i really want to go to medical school. However, somehow i am still unsure if i have all it needs to become a medical student and later a doctor...
I appreciate if all the current medical student can share little insite what i will have to deal with if i'll get in or everyone else who had definitely made up their mind about medical school.

What is it that you feel you are missing?

I am not a medical student(yet?) but I have definetly decided to apply in a year (that is when I am ready to take the MCAT and everything.) I will be totally honest with you...I have worked as a nurse for about 3 years and really know what IT all entails. Every now and then I get down and think "I am a loser...How am I ever going to get in." Now, my GPA is borderline,3.6 and I have research and clinical experience, but I never feel like it is ever enough!

A conclusion I have decided to follow with all this is: Focus on the courses that you need to take and just worry about LEARNING the material. Plan ahead! I have been studying the MCAT now, off and on, for 1 year, hey... I have 1 more year to study it yet before I take it! I have just started to write my personal statement (rough,rough....draft). Make your final decision in whatever you do in this way:

When I am 80 years old and look back on a instance in my life, will I regret it? Be honest with yourself and take time to answer lifes delimas and fasten your seatbelt because it is a bumpy ride (safety first, of course

)

My college record had started on the bad end because when i was a freshman, i didn't know what definitely i'll be... So i did kindda fall back on my studying and my grades. After eliminate all the pushing and criticizing from my parent, i finally know that i really want to go into medical (as being a doctor)because this's what i really want to be 10 yrs from now, but i felt like i am late to the race and behind everyone.... So that's why i want to ask everyone to see if anyone else had any different point of view.
But i really appreciate your answer Pebbles, it helps.!!!

Don't take this the wrong way or anything Pebbles BUT I have to take issue with the statement:

When you are accepted: You will know what IT entails to get in

Now if you are just talking about being a nurse, then you do know all about it
When you finish med school: You will know what IT entails

Until that time, unless you have finished some type of advanced academic degree - you do not know what IT entails (and even then, there are few things that can prepare you for what IT entails)

Yes, I did mean the bump and grind, not the avenue to medical student. However, I am working on advancing myself academically in a Genetics BA also. Thanks for noticing that, it is important that I clarify.

I would be very surprised to find that all pre-meds did not experience self-doubt repeatedly during their undergrad years. Medicine is a very competitive field and it is easy to get bogged down in the numbers game(i.e. my gpa is ... and my mcat was ...). that is all crap. not that grades, mcat, are not very important to getting into school, but my god if that is all that one focuses on it will kill you. Sit back, look into your heart and decide if this path is for you. I fit is, you will be able to make it through the difficult times and will accept that you can become a doctor.

I find that the thought of the personal responsibility that becomeing a doctor entails is frightening, but at the same time it is all that i want to do. You can make it. Good luck.
