Hello everyone,

my situation is as follows:
My freshman year at SCU, I got a D in my third quarter in General Chemistry, I am now trying to retake the course at my new school, UCI. The science departments are giving me some grief saying that the D is technically passing and I may need to retake the course at a local CC and not at UCI.

So my question is,
Will dental school admissions look down upon me needing to take the course at a CC, now that I am enrolled at a 4-year institution? I am scared that me changing schools(SCU-->CC-->UCI and CC) so often alludes to inconsistencies in my academic abilities, when that's just not the case. Please let me know! Thank you all!!

CC credit is a dicey thing. Some D schools take it, some don't, and many restrict the number of hours that they accept. And yes, it is better to do as well if not better grade-wise at the four year school. Have you brought up these facts with the science department? Have you thought of going to them and presenting your case, facts in hand? Look up the grade/requirement policies for 2-3 D schools you are interested in and present these to the department, along with some proof that you will take the class seriously and do better than a D. See if that moves them.

my problem is that I am nervous to be taking my physics requirement and my general chemistry requirement at the same time! thoughts on that? I'm sure I would be able to work through it, but I don't want to risk a grade. I am currently in communication with the Physical Science Dept to see if I can take it... honestly, no idea what they're going to say.

I took chem II, physics I, and genetics all in my first 19 hour semester back at school. It was pretty intense, I studied all the time and drank more coffee than you can possibly imagine. So, it can be done, but you have to be honest with yourself about what you will be capable of and willing to do. Challenge and push yourself, but don't bite off more than you can chew. Do you have a pre dentistry/med advisor you can talk to to help you in your situation?

Yea I actually do, there are multiple advisors but they're all singing to a different note, so I'm lost as to who to listen to anymore. I know the classes I'm taking, with the chemistry being the variable, and the rest, other than physics, are more than manageable.

Yeah, advisors do that. Some people say not to stack too many science classes. On the flip side, if you do stack science classes in undergrad and do well it shows the dental schools that you can deal with a heavy course load. You are going to have to choose a path that you are confident with.

And if you must do chem at the community college, that's not necessarily horrible. You just need to be careful when you apply that the schools you are interested in will take the credit. If you finish strong at the 4 year school and the only other CC credit you take is the chem, I don't think that will look too bad. I just suggest that you take it at the 4 year school if you can to save yourself some headaches.
