If I bring my own headgear (noise reduction) to the exam, will they inspect it and then allow me to use it? or what is the standard procedure regarding these types of items? This is what it looks like:

argg, i just read that they dont permit anything but ear plugs.. although they have industrial ear covers .. what do these look like?

You can only bring earplugs, in their sealed, original packaging. You can't bring outside muffs. They will have muffs available at your station, if you desire.

With the exception of earplugs (see below), you may bring no personal items into the testing room other than your ID. You must store personal belongings, including telephones, pagers, books, handbags, and food in the secure area that will be provided for you. You are encouraged to leave personal items at home on test day, neither AAMC nor the testing contractor are responsible for loss of damage to personal belongings.
You may bring your own earplugs to wear with or without the headphones provided at the test center. They must be in the original, unopened package and must be presented to the Test Center Administrator for inspection.

I honestly think this is overkill. Most test centers are much more quiet than where most people take their practice tests, and the headphones they give you when you take the exam work surprisingly well.

i just bought some ear plugs that are actually slightly better than the headgear.. 🙂 gona try em out on aamc 7 tommorow. anyhow where do you guys prefer to write your tests?

i know that im usualy fine writing ps in a noisy area, wrote one with construction going on in library and i got a 14 - aamc 6. but for verbal i had to move to a quieter area because its much harder to concentrate - need silence.... i usually prefer a closed study room in the library while wearing head covers/ear plugs

Do what I did on test day, ear plugs AND their ear muffs. I wasn't taking any chances that I would possibly hear people starting their writing while I was doing verbal. With that combo, I'm fairly certain a bomb could have went off and I would have still been chugging away at my Achilles passage!

yea im gona do that for sure, a combo of both. 😀. ive tried my headgear and earplugs at the same time, and i just phase out of the real world.

I've been using my ear plugs every opportunity I get! In the beginning, it was WAY too quiet and I got distracted just by my own breathing and resonance sounds from my pencil tapping, etc. But now that I'm growing more accustomed to them, they're amazing! Definitely the best investment I've made for my education (and hearing)!

I used their earmuffs...loved 'em until the Bio section. At that point the earrings I have finally had dug enough into my scalp that I had to take the stupid things off. Then, I missed them because I loved the silence they gave me, so I kept putting them on and taking them off at the end. haha

Oh the pain we will endure!

The earmuffs they give you make it TOO silent. I ended up taking them off. I was like OMG I can hear my heartbeat!

They hurt my head as soon as I tried them XD. Really though, the place is dead silent save for gentle air conditioning humming and people leaving, none of which I noticed.

I brought one set of earplugs, not in a sealed container, and they let me in with them 🙂

I used only earplugs because the earmuffs hurt my head =( I was only allowed to bring in earplugs NOT in a package (for some odd reason)...but either way, just tell the person at your center that you'll be using earplugs in case they suspect something when you stick it in your ear =P

So before I took my MCAT I stopped by a CVS and bought some last minute earplugs. Best decis-ish of my life! You never know when some douche bag wants to mow the grass around the testing center or some uhaul truck backing up in the parking lot.
