Short and to the point: Does HPSP cover medical insurance if required by your school? In my case, the university requires all dental students to either buy into their insurance or have proof of a third party supplier -- either way, you must have it (in other words, you must pay for it).

Yes, but only the required medical insurance. If you want to add on dental or vision, those you'll have to pay with your own stipend. Just make sure you fill out cost data worksheet (CDW) on MODS every month to be reimbursed.

It's required at my school and they charge for health insurance all at once at the beginning of the year which I signed up for, and it was paid for with my tuition without me having to do anything extra.

VERY good point. Here's how the Army handles it.

1. The insurance must be required of all students at the school and we only pay for single rate coverage - no family plans
2. If it is a school plan, and the school has the ability to invoice the Army for it (like a lab fee or Vital Source books) we pay the school directly as in the case of @tbiv21
3. If your school has a plan, but does not invoice the Army, you pay out-of-pocket and the Army will reimburse you on a cost data worksheet
4. If your school has a plan, but also lets you find your own (as in the case of the OP) the Army will reimburse up to the cost of the school's plan
5. If you school does not have a plan, the Army sets the cap based on other schools in the same geographic location

Insurance is complicated and rather Q&A on SDN, please call the HPSP office 877-MED-ARMY so that your answer can be tailored to you, your needs and your school.

This has a breakdown of what insurance is and isn't covered by HPSP for the student and their family:
Health Insurance For HPSP Scholarship Recipients

I am always leery of something that is all encompassing like this link. It provides an overview of the most questioned scholarship benefit with one glaring error, "as long as the professional program requires students to have health insurance (as all of them do)", bold portion is not true. Again, I cannot stress enough that insurance is complicated and very nuanced, if you are Army, please call the HPSP office 877-MED-ARMY. They are paid to answer these types of questions.
