I have had some health issues this past year that caused me to get some bad grades. Do I need to show proper documentation that I had health issues for my medical school application or will they take my word for it? I have endometriosis and peptic ulcers.

Were you hospitalized during the semester?

Your health information is private and need not be disclosed. If you choose to disclose it, you would be best off doing so only after you can truly state that the problem is now under control. And be prepared for questions about it at interview time. You do not need proof of the condition, but your academic record needs to show proof that you can consistently produce great grades over a long period of time. Having a health issue that compromised your GPA can be forgiven, but it will not be an excuse for ongoing subpar performance.

If you have a really bad semester and have good documentation, you might consider petitioning for retroactive withdrawal from that term, so those grades do not show up on your transcript.

I was not hospitalized. I went to the doctor and after tests, I was diagnosed, but have not had surgery or anything on a bigger scale yet, besides taking medicine. And I don't want to petition for retroactive withdrawal because it will cause me to fall behind since only one of my classes was affected. The other teachers were willing to work around the health issues.
