Health Tourism , Interesting and growing trend now supported by Insurance companies like Bluecross blue shield. Recently a giant pathological lab is sending all its lab specimens to mexico and Southeast asia and as a result many Medical techs lost their jobs, MRI and CTs at many hospitals including some i know by name in Chicago are interpretted by Radiologists sitting in Kualalampur and Manila for just $15 per case compared to our $90-$150 charged by US Radiologost 🙁

Iam just 5 yrs old to this country so i dont know how the system works but iam utterly disappointed and suprised over the flow of jobs, economy and now even our Healthcare jobs to cheap end countries. I drive american car, use american brands frm computers to my motorola Q 😀 . As citizens of this country whats your opinion on this whole topic. We are ignoring everyday but if the common man doesnt have his job or economy is going down then how the heck is he gonna pay my $4500 bill 🙁

Seriously one cannot say everything is allright coz just look around us and we will get answers.

Why would you do that to yourself?

well i own a cherokee and Wrangler both JEEP company. And they are sooo awesome especially for the wisconsin/ Illinois weather. And no other car company i know makes JEEP WRANGLER like models 😉

but the point iam tryin to make is that what plan of action we as American Taxpayers want? Its a very serious issue! Previously all used to say, oh healthcare is the safest career choice in US as healthcare is here to stay. In this election some candidates want universal healthcare. Just compare the salaries from the countries that follow that model and see the salaries in USA. After putting in 10-12 yrs of my life. Do i really wanna make $70-80K like my counterparts in Australia or England. The whole future is so confusing to me.

every single aspect of society is being impacted by this thing. Even armed forces contracts are now going to AirBUS (france) instead of our good old Boeing.

Lol, its a weekend and i hve nothin else to do. So iam imagining all these stuff:laugh:

Since I have time, I will add to this. Are you talking about healthcare in america benefiting you or the population. Do you know how many people out there are on Medicaid, which I believe is not adequate. People need to be healthy so they can be productive citizens and pay more taxes. As for Universal Healthcare, I don't think it will ever happen in America. There is just not enought resources for that.

I am from England. Such a tiny little island. But universal healthcare doesn't even work on our tiny island, let alone a country the size of America.

Patients in England can sometimes wait MONTHS for serious operations. The only reason I think it is still around there is that English people have a mindset that suffering is good for you and just stick with what God deals you.

I digress. Recently, loads of people in England are switching to private insurance companies that have started to become established on the island. Sooner or later, these private companies will out-compete national health organizations because: Better trained physicians, shorter waiting lists for surgery, and greater flexibility in healthcare decisions.

I just don't see a socialized healthcare system working in a country this large. I think we need revisions instead of an entirely new system.

Medicine of every type is the new factory work of today. IMO, medicine is a rapidly turning into a very poor career alternative and is rapidly turning into a dumpy profession.

Very very few ever get rich and most languish in a dismal world of pretending to be a rich doctor while their $120k after taxes gives them the same (if not less) income as the rest of the middle-middle class.

Heck 25yrs ago unionized factory workers with no dr. title pushing a button for 10 hrs a day were making well over 100k/yr.

Anyway.

Stay positive everyone during residency while you slave away for the welthy hospital systems many of which won't let let your DPM attendings even do rear foot work in the ankle b/c of their Pod degrees. You'll get to do plenty of ankle fractures for the orthopods though... just to have their profession turn around and tell you that if you want to do ankle fractures you have to go to MEDICAL SCHOOL like they did in texas.

But no worries,

You'll soon be rich after you pay off those tiny student loans in about a year or two after residency.

Wiskers,

You seem even more jaded than before.

I hope everything is still going well for you.

I think he was clear that he was concerned with his own self interest.

I think he was clear that he was concerned with his own self interest. There is nothing wrong with that. The ludicrous idea that doctors should only care about patients and have a laissez-faire attitude about their own profession is one of the reasons that health care in the US is in its current state. It is the reason many doctors perform procedures that are reimbursed at a lower rate than it costs them.

I do not believe healthcare is not a God given guaranteed right. It is not granted by the US constitution. As far as services provided by Medicaid are concerned I must state the following- Many people who are able bodied do not work because they make more collecting welfare and working 'off the books'. They often have more benefits than elderly people who worked hard in the US for most of their lives & now are only insured by Medicare. Many people in NYS who are on Medicaid and are HIV+ have 'housekeepers' who clean their houses even if they are in their 20s-30s and are able bodied. Not to mention the cost of Registered Nurses who often make daily home visits just to monitor the patients and make sure they are taking their medications. There are plenty of resources available. Unfortunately they are being misused by an arbitrary socialist system.

The resources are available. That being said universal health care is still a bad idea. It was a bad idea for the UK whose healthcare has recently been rated as third world! This is the United Kingdom we are talking about. Canada is not any better with a system that forces many Canadians into the US to seek competent health care beacuse it is illegal to pay for private healthcare in Canada. When the less than adequate healthcare system does not provide reasonable healthcare to Canadians they seek care in the US... if they can afford it. Universal health care will provide coverage for everyone, but how poor will the quality of that care be? Where will Americans go for better health care when they find the socialized system inadequate? Perhaps they can go to Mexico and meet the Radiologists who read their MRI's.

Dr. K

Do you treat patients on Medicaid?
I know some DPMs who accept Medicare but do not take patients on Medicaid

NYS Medicaid does not reimburse podiatrists for visits unless the place of service is an article 28 facility (generally reserved for clinics).

Please do not misunderstand my previous statements regarding some of the benefits received by some people on Medicaid or the unfortunate people who have contracted HIV. One could easily claim that the NYS Medicaid program is severely underfunded if you were to look at the fee schedule. I simply do not agree with how the government's health care funds on a whole are distributed. The government is not performing health care administration adequately with its current programs. Conditions will not improve if we look to the same government to manage an even larger system.
