I jumped in and posted on a different thread before realizing that it would probably be nice to introduce myself first. 😳

I'm a 34 y/o married mother of 4 children (2 boys/2 girls, ages 5, almost-7, 11 and 13). I enjoy traveling, cooking, boating and surfing. I am terrified of bears, flying and driving over drawbridges. I've been a stay-at-home-mom for the better part of the last 12 years, and finally, the youngest is in school full-time. (WOOO HOOO!)

I tend to do things backwards in life, such as starting a family before getting my education, but things seem to work out pretty good in the end. No regrets, and all of that. 😉 My husband is currently working on his Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, and doesn't plan on stopping his education until they tell him there's no more classes for him to take.

I have wanted to become a doctor since I was in the 6th grade. When most kids were picking boogers and flicking them on their friends for the sheer gross-out factor, I wanted to know what the boogers were made of, and why they were different colors. My friends did their book reports on titles such as Superfudge and Iggy's House. I did mine on the Cardiovascular System, as explained in Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body. Somewhere along the line, I strayed from following my dream.

To make a long story short, I finally convinced myself that I could do this, and told my husband. (I was secretly terrified that he would laugh, although in hindsight, that was nonsense.) He said, verbatim, "It's about d@mn time you finally realized what everyone else has known all along." Someone could have clued me in, ya know. LOL

I am looking forward to finding a comfy spot here and getting to know you all a little better. Sorry for being verbose... I'm just a little happy to be me lately. 😀

hiya snuggy.
34 is not that old, sound like you have a nice support system in your family.

🙂

Hi!

When will you be applying? Good luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

happydays, I'm starting from scratch here, so I won't even be taking the MCAT until April 2009. I've got a long road ahead of me. 🙂

Welcome to SDN!

You are truly in the perfect position...in that you are starting from zero and hence have no old grades from eons ago to haunt you. I was just like you and started undergrad for the first time when I was 34 and applied to medical school at 38...now I am turning 40 in two months and will be half-way done with medical school. Welcome aboard!

Hi, I am 42, a mother of four, but I have a 19, 17, 14, and 12 year old. I went back after 20 years and took the physics I needed to complete my prereq, took the MCAT and will start in August at an osteopathic school. You are fortunate to be able to start from scratch that old gpa can be an albatross.SDN will help you stay ahead of things especially if you tap into the mentor thread.I only wish I had found it earlier than I did. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

If it's your dream, stick to it no matter what anyone says.

I'm living proof that with hard work and persistance, dreams do come true. 🙂

Welcome Snuggy.

I'm proud of you for going for your dream.

But, warning, SDN is highly addictive... 😛

Disgruntled, I'll certainly take that under advisement. LOL! 😀

Everyone, thank you so much for such a great welcome. I really appreciate the personal stories that some of you have shared with me. I admit that I've felt a bit apprehensive about starting this at my age, but I refuse to let anything get in my way. Your stories are most definitely an inspiration for me, so thank you for that. 🙂

YOU are officially my Favorite Person of the Day. 😀

Where do you surf? I'm up here in Pismo... it's definitely been going off lately!! Not the mush that our summer vacationers experience.
Well, YOU made my day now! 😀

I spent the better part of my life surfing the east coast of Florida; mostly near St. Augustine Beach. We just recently relocated back to FL after 2 1/2 years "up north" in Michigan, and I haven't had the chance to paddle out since we've been back. (nevermind the fact that I sold my beloved board prior to our out-of-state move.) There was a surf club for Great Lakes surfers, which just boggled my mind. I would have been the only one out there in the middle of summer with a wetsuit on.

I don't know what it's like where you are, but FL usually gets its best swells during the winter, which is probably weak compared to a bad day out there. Every now and again we'll get a nice swell with some offshores, along with a little tidal push... ahhhhhh, heaven. But our summers sound a lot like yours... mushy, weak, and little-to-no push. (unless there's a storm out there, of course.)

I've never had the pleasure of surfing the West Coast, but it's on my things-to-do-before-I-die list... along with a zillion other places. 😀

**edited to add that I *just* saw your title, and got a good chuckle out of it. 😛

Yeah, I've heard of the Great Lakes thing!! Sounds a bit to frosty for me... even in dead of summer.

Things here in Pismo are pretty heavy, plus a little too cold. Summer time is a good time to get out there and learn, plus I tool around with a boogie board too, so it's perfect to learn new tricks and sometimes, it's the only way to catch a barrel!

I'm moving to Portland in about a year, and I hear it's monstrous up there...

Well hopefully the surfers out there have more respect (generally speaking, of course) for boogie boarders than they do in FL. A lot of surfers have the mentality that bb'ers are just speed bumps. I really don't like that whole vibe, personally, as I'm willing to share the lineup with anyone and everyone... as long as nobody snakes me.

Good to know there's another surfing girl who's into it for more than just the fad. I look forward to seeing you around here. 😀
