Please help, I’m feeling very conflicted. I’m currently in orgo 2 facing what probably will be a c at the highest and very likely lower. I have two exams left, but nothing to indicate they are going to go any better than the first. I’m in my second year and have done well on my other classes. I’ve got A’s in everything except gen Chem 2 and a bio class (both were B’s). I am a very focused student, but after losing my mom last semester on top of the general covid depression I have found it impossible to focus and remain motivated. I am wondering if taking a withdrawal would kill my chances at med school, or if it would be frowned upon over just taking the C (if I could even get it). Please help and share you experiences with C’s and withdrawals. I’m struggling over here.

Orgo is a pre-med requirement of a lot of medical schools (along with gen bio, chem, stats, etc), meaning they require a straight C or higher in that course. If you have done the math and think that the highest you can do is C and you don't think you can do better, I would W the course and take it again next semester. If you keep the course and score lower than a C (even C-), you'll have to retake anyway, only the medical school application will average your first and second ochem grade- they don't do grade replacement. Your best shot is to take the W and take it next semester when you can have that one letter grade count. I think schools will be lenient to W's during the "covid year" if you mention your withdrawal because of personal circumstances in regards to the pandemic situation and the loss of a loved one, my condolences.

I'm going to give you my personal experience, during an awful personal experience as well I failed ochem 1 because I was too stubborn to not take the W when I had the chance. I retook it and got an A-, but my grade averaged of course to like a C for my sGPA because of grade averaging in med school apps. Although I got in somewhere, my sGPA could have looked ALOT BETTER had I taken the W, and I'll always regret it. Don't make the mistake I made. Take the W.

I second going with the W. Let them know about your mom if you are asked about it in an interview. They'll understand.

It's hard to lose your mom at any age, but I think especially when you're young. <3 I'm so sorry.

Take the W. Do better next time.

This is what a W should be used for especially if you feel like you can't pull it up. There is no issue with taking a W then knocking it out of the park next time. I'm sad to hear about all the things that have recently happened in your life OP, but stay strong and make sure your mental health comes first.

I just want to further echo other's comments. Im very sorry for your loss and what you've gone through the past year. Situations like these are exactly why W's are offered in the first place.
