Hi all, I was hoping to get some help on a few things!!

First off im a non sci major (poly sci with a minor in biology) and im hoping to go to a DO school, but will be applying to both DO and MD programs. I have been looking into research opportunities but am having a hard time finding any for a person with a small amount of science background. I was hoping for any suggestions on what to do?

Also, I am interested in community/public health and would like to go into primary care. I am currently working with our school's internship coordinator to be able to get an internship with the chicago public health department. How do you think that would look? I mean im waiting for hospitals to contact me about volunteer apps and i tutor once a week in a low-income area and i also work. I know these ECs aren't medically related but I have heard arguments from both sides...

Also, I just read this one post about a fall back plan and kinda freaked-im really set on medicine, like REALLY and i don't know what a good fall back would be if it doesn't go as planned the first time around. i am going to take an EMT course next semester to get certified to have an interesting job and to have some major experience that is related to what i desire to do for the rest of mylife...i mean there is always the what if...and yes, i hae thought about nursing..but i KNO once i get into that i will stay and i don't want to do that.

any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!

Personally I would choose volunteering over research if you are pressed for time and no school you are applying to actually REQUIRES research. Yes it looks good but other things look better.

Not all your ECs have to be medically related, heck the majority of most people's ECs probably aren't medically related. You do need to make sure you shadow a DO though for most schools.

After you've addressed these then and only then would I look into research if it was something you were actually interested in.

I am also a non science major (economics). Trying to understand trends and root problems, and most of my ECs focus on leadership / community projects.

My opinion is that the best way to do ECs is to have ECs look good with the rest of your application. So if your major is political science and maybe in your personal statement, you talk about the importance of policy reform over the next 5-10 years, then having EC in this area would be stronger that having some disassociated research EC.

That's just my 2 cents... because I did some research and I HATED it, so I hope schools aren't just looking for research.
