what should be my First choice of classes before Med school?

No classes you take before med school will influence you going into plastics. I would suggest visiting the specialty forums on this site to see what residency programs look for in med students applying for plastics. However, it seems as though you are not even applying to med school yet so none of the advice would really apply to you. Just do well in undergrad and get into the med school you want.

What year are you in school? I am not aware of any college courses that are focused on plastic surgery. Your school might have surgery internships you can complete during the school year, or you could look into shadowing a plastic surgeon. Why have you chosen plastic surgery?

🙂 well guys Ill be bold and honest.. i Havent even started yet on anything Im goign to strat from scratch.. ive decided to do something with my life and im gonna dedicated the next 15 years of it for studying medicine.. why well Anatomy is a pasion of mine.. I love the way the body works..

my question really is.. where should I sart Oviously.. I need Associate and Bahelor. For me it will be common sense in doing something that has to do with medicine before joinin Med school.. like nurse or Pharmaseutic.. that was my question,,

BTW im 23 years old.. Lets say everything goes to plan and my schooling goes well.. at what age could I officially call myself a plastic surgeon.

Assuming this is a real question (if not, sorry, playful sarcasm doesn't translate well into the written word): you don't need an associate's, just a bachelor's. Nursing and Pharm are not bachelor's degrees (except at a few schools, which have nursing degrees for undergrads).

Also, you don't need to be in a medically related field in undergrad; you just need to do well academically, take the med-school prereqs, and prepare yourself for the MCAT appropriately.

To call yourself a plastic surgeon, you'll have to go through undergrad, med school, and fellowship/residency. So, assuming four years for med and undergrad and seven years for plastics (maybe as few as four? I'm not sure on this one) you'll be 38 by the time you're a 'real' plastic surgeon.

Just try to do well in undergrad... one step at a time. You are talking about doing one of the hardest most competive specialties in a field that is itself competitive. First paint the fence, then you may karate...

Just try to do well in undergrad... one step at a time. You are talking about doing one of the hardest most competive specialties in a field that is itself competitive. First paint the fence, then you may karate...

I Asure you this is not a joke.. im very serious.. I was just always confused about if I HAd to take sometype of medicine related studies before Med school..
I would always figure it made no sense to take computer programing before joining med school..

You can be a history major for all med schools care. All they want you to do is take the basic prereqs. I suggest you lurk on the forums for a while.

IMHO, because it is a show that was tailored to awaken some of the most basic instincts in people. It is crude, it has sex, subjects about money, drama, "good-looking" people and quite an erroneous depiction of the life and career of an average PRS surgeon 😱

Well if your starting from scratch and love the human body/anatomy (not a bad thing for a surgeon) you might enroll in college and try to go for a Bachelors in Biology or a related field. Fastest possible time-4yrs.

Med school-4yrs.

Plastics Residency-5-7yrs depending on program.

I will start to call my self a plastic surgeon (in training) right about when you start training.

Thats fifteen years in the longer of the fast route, would be 1-2 years more if you had to do G-surg first.

whe have undergraduate research here at ucd for plastic surgery. its a 199 course, but i have no idea what an undergraduate would do for research with that.

oh boy. Wonder how many people are being inspired by that show to go for med school and plastic surgery....

I think you need a deep deep wanting to help people. Im only entering undergrad this fall but I know plastics and reconstructive is for me. I think though deciding in the 3rd and 4th year is a good thing but I think for some there is that firey passion that is there for a long time and sticks. Something that makes you want to shout it out to the world. So I dont think everyone will be thinking of what speciality they want in their 3rd or 4th year. Definently take it 1 step at a time though especially if your going to be in just the beginning of undergrad like me. Get that 4.0GPA BABY!

you can finish plastics faster if you match directly into it. it'll take about as long as gen surg. that route is very very difficult.

there are also 3+3, do 3 years of gen surg and 3 years of plastics

and then the long road of 5 years gen surg and then the plastics fellowship. that'll probably total at least 8 years not including research.

Most plastics residency programs are 6 years, there are a handful of 5y places and a few 7y places.

General surgery is 5 on paper, but many big academic places require 7ys.

The long route is doing general first and then a 2-3 y plastics residency afterwards. It is theoretically jump off general after 3 years into plastic, but it has to be at the same institution where you are currently training.

some people will do a gen surg residency and then quit midway through to get into a plastics spot. most gen surg programs obviously do not like this, so you'll have to keep it secret if that's your plan.
