so i am starting up a non-trad student organization here and in the process i need to specifically need to define what makes a non-trad.
so far i have:
1. anyone who is over 25
2. anyone who has taken 1 or more year(s) off during their education
3. anyone returning to school to pursue a second career
4. anyone who is married and/or has a family

anything i should add or have missed??

Are you planning to exclude people who don't fit your requirements? Or are you just using this as descriptive stuff?

The traditional path is straight from undergrad to med school, why not just say anyone who didn't take this path?

I consider myself non-trad because I decided to get a PhD in physics, then switched to a masters and am applying this year. Hope im non-trad, I spoke about it in my secondaries.

definetly not planning on excluding anyone. i am trying to come up with a working definition so that people who may not think they are non-trad (major changers, married but went straight from undergrad to med school) would stop and realize that they are perhaps in fact non-traditional.

i thought about that, but that would exclude perhaps those who chose to get married or have a family even if they went straight from undergrad to med school. i know this is a rare bunch but i would not want those people to feel excluded.

you would be due to the change in major and path, i forgot that one.

🙂

I bet if you started a group, people who self-identify as non-trads would gravitate to you. For example, someone who had to work full time during undergrad might consider themselves as having more in common with non-trads than with the average college kid.

For encouraging the married folks, regardless of age, definitely have socials where kids and spouses are specifically invited. 🙂

I feel like I'm a non-traditional.

I am 20, but I took a year off after high school, and just switched from nursing. I probably won't maltriculate medical school until I'm 23 or 24; hopefully the latter. I am hoping I get a scholarship to go to Africa this summer!
I'm also doing EMT training (This was before I decided to go to medical school and why I chose to go to MS).

Isn't a non-traditional considered anyone who doesn't go to medical school straight out of high school/undergrad, at age 22?

That is how I see it, you are welcome to call yourself a non-trad if you don't apply at the end of your junior year/beginning of senior year of your 1st degree.
