Hello Everyone.
I've been only reading threads from this forum and it is my first time posting anything.

I am in Class of 2012,
My GPA (science 2.9) cumulative (3.2)

I haven't taken any DAT yet, and I am taking this December.

I am currently taking a semester off because I had a honor counsel issue and got suspended. (I gave clicker to someone for two days, and I got permanent record on my transcript.)

So I am expecting to graduate semester after which is Fall of 2012.

I am truly desperate. I know most people at this point would gave up, but one thing different about my attitude is that, I am not going to give up. No matter I end up dentist at age of 30, I am willing to change myself and keep tryng.

Here are some of my questions
(1)
Do I have any chance getting into ANY dental schools?
(2)
In application, if I don't mention my (suspended, permanent record status), would dental schools find out? and what happens?
(3)
Can you guys tell me some path that what I can do to reach my ultimate goal of becoming dentist?
ex) post doc, go to graduate school first, graduate as late as possible to bring GPA up. etc

Thanks and sorry for the depressing questions

Do I have any chance getting into ANY dental schools?: : Bad gpa coupled + academic dishonesty = slim to none chance of getting in to ANY dental school.
(2)
In application, if I don't mention my (suspended, permanent record status), would dental schools find out? and what happens? : what will happen is, you might get in, pay your deposit, and a few months before matriculating, schools will find out in your background check/from your uni, and expel you. If they dont find out then, they might possibly find out while your in dental school, then kick you out then.

I would find out how long that dishonesty mark will be on your transcript, ways to can take that out. If you have already taken upper level bios, and are a bio major, i would say Masters. if you havnt taken that many upperlevel bios, I would recommend post bacc. If you cant get that dishonesty mark off, then I would make sure I have a great explination on AADSAS for it. Dont get me wrong, there are those that get in with marks, but having a mark like that is pretty hurtful, especially coupled with a poor gpa.

Thanks and sorry for the depressing questions

1.) youre science gpa is below a 3.0...meaning your BCP is probably < 3.0. A lot of dental schools use a cut off for that.
2.) You should always be honest, but nobody on here can tell you the ultimate outcome of trying to lie. If it's on your permanent record than they probably can see it. Talk to your dean after proving yourself by getting all A's and see what can be done about that. A clicker is a little less harsh than cheating on a test in my opinion, but definitely step it up to make a point.
3.)Post bacc for sure, get that science gpa up above a 3.0. And if that clicker issue gets off your record you have a great chance.

It's not over yet. GL

Let me clear out something for you. First, most people are NOT going to give up, not SDN. There is a thread for people with sub 3.0 GPA in this forum, search for it and read it. You will see that people keep trying no matter what happen to them. A lot of them got into Dental school actually. Its a great news that you are not going to give up so +++++ for you. Second, I am 28 and Im applying this cycle. If i am lucky enough to get in this cycle, I will be 33 when I get out. You are not old, not old 🙂

1. You def. have a chance to get into dental school if you try hard. From now on, take your classes seriously and try to get all As (easier said than done). Avoid hard classes if you want but get that sGPA up.

2. If its in you transcript, you have to put it down. If it is not in your transcript but in your record. You can request your school to delete it after you graduate, show your school that you are really sorry and if this is the 1st time, they will likely to forgive you. People do deserve a 2nd chance. Make sure that you don't do anything like this again. If you dont report it on AADSAS and Dental schools find out, auto-rejection for you.

3. I suggest you find a good Special Master Program (SMP) and read that sub 3.0 thread.

Don't worry. Everyone deserves a second chance and you will get there if you work hard. Gluck with everything.

Welcome to SDN!

Dental school is not out of reach for you but you are going to have to put in some serious work! Here's my advice:

You MUST MUST MUST do well on the DAT. This is easier said than done. Spare no expense when it comes to preparing for the test. Use the DAT discussions forum for help coming up with a game plan. A 23 would do you good but that is like the 98th percentile so it is not an easy feat.

DO NOT LIE on your app!!! Everyone makes mistakes so if you can own up to them and reflect on what you learned then you are displaying maturity. ADCOMs can find out more than you know. Don't risk it.

Start working on your app now so that you can submit in early June. With your lower GPA you will likely not get a pre-Dec interview but you will be first in line when schools go to round 2. Here's the link for AADSAS instructions: http://www.adea.org/dental_educatio...icants/GeneralInstructions/Pages/default.aspx

Make sure you calculate your GPA the way AADSAS does so you know exactly where you stand. Here's the link for GPA calculations: http://www.adea.org/dental_educatio...tructions/Documents/2011 GPA Calculations.pdf
Here's the link to make sure you are categorizing you classes the same as AADSAS: http://www.adea.org/dental_educatio...ons/Documents/ADEA AADSAS Course Subjects.pdf

If your BCP and/or sGPA is under 3.0 you should take more upper division bio. It would be a good idea to do that anyway.

You could try to do a member search on www.predents.com (make sure you do class of 2011 since 2012 is still underway). Search for someone with the same stats as you and see where they got interviews and think about applying to those schools.

It's a long road but you can do it.! Good luck!

To be honest... i probably wouldn't apply this next summer. It costs a TON of money and it might be best spent elsewhere.

I would stay in undergrad or do a post bac first.... whichever is cheaper to take classes with. Often times if you are in a degree program, classes are a little cheaper. If that's the case and you're not a bio major, consider double majoring in bio. If not go post-bac.... You need to raise that undergrad science GPA to about a 3.2 to be competitive. So don't apply until that happens.

Study your balls off for the DAT and aim for a 21+, that's what it is going take, because to be honest an 18 or 19 will not cut it, your GPA is already below the median.

But to be honest with you.... even if you do all this, it will still be tough because of that academic dishonesty mark. So just plan on raising gpa to 3.2 approximately 1-2 years. Then if that doesn't work go for an MS.

Good luck!!! 😀

Apply now to one school you really don't care about. That way your AADSAS will be all good to go, pretty much, for next cycle..and you can submit on the first day.

You won't stand a chance this cycle, but at least you'll be in a good spot (submission-wise) for next cycle.

Thanks everyone for the answers.

I'm an international Student with F-1 Visa. And I heard you can't do post backs for international students. Is this true?

Any more information about post back?

Your gpa in combination with your status as an international student is going to make it very very difficult to get in dental schools, you could try to raise your gpa but you must be getting 4.0s the rest of the way because average gpa of applicants is also going up every year. I would not recommend applying until gpa is above 3.5 and DAT is above 21 especially with your international status for a good chance.

what are good steps for me to take until I graduate. I am now starting 1st semester of Senior Year, so I got one year left till I graduate (After Fall of 2012). I am also planing to take summer school to bring up GPA. And When should I be applying for the dental schools?

To be honest, I think your best route would be to take additional classes spring 2013 to boost your GPA. I would also make sure you score high on your DAT (20 or above in each section), and have great ECs and ALOT of volunteering. You will have to explain your suspension in your app, and you're gonna need to prove to adcoms that you have learned from the experience etc.

Good luck

You will have to spend more time after you graduate but this is the ingredient list for you:

You will most likely have to spend a minimum 2.5 years getting 4.0s for every class to increase gpa to 3.5. Rock the DAT (23+) and you can spend about 1.5 years minimum getting 4.0s. To offset that suspension you are going to have to do some really crazy ECs, go on a dental mission, volunteer everywhere, research, be active in your pre-dental club, network with some dentists (who knows maybe they teach at a school). Also make a meeting with an advisor at your prospective dental school and make sure they know who you are and tell them about your suspension, make an appointment every semester updating your progress.

Apply when gpa is above 3.5, do not apply anytime before that.

I know this might be a lot of work but if you really want dentistry then your going to have to push for it. You are not alone, I heard stories from my classmates as a D1 whose friends were in a much much worse situation and they got in.

Thanks for your advice. Everyday I think about I can't change the past, but I can change things from now on. So I am going to put all my focus on studying and getting into dental school until I achieve it.
