Hey everyone! I am currently a New York resident applying to schools next week when the app opens. Not sure what to think about my school list. I have about 80 schools. I am aware primaries will be 3162$ and secondaries will likely range between $2500-$4500; I have saved extra financial aid money for years and money from working to prepare for this cost. I want to ensure I am accepted somewhere the first time around, My plan is to apply to all schools in my state (NY), all schools in florida (thats where my undergrad school is) which is about 22 schools right there. Then I added all private schools that I feel competitive at stat-wise, and some dream/reach schools. Then I analyzed all public OOS schools with good statistics (MSAR) for accepting OOS and apply there as well. I also plan on applying to some safe schools as well. What do you all think of this plan? My main concern is actually filling out the secondaries. I don't feel as though I could possibly fill out 80 secondaries, assuming every school sends them? (Especially with my 56 hour/week research commitment this summer. ) My philosophy is to cast a wide net, and go to the very best school I get into. What do you all think??

TL;DR.... I have a ton of schools, don't know if I can handle all the secondaries with busy schedule, don't know which to cut, and don't know if i have adequate safe schools

I am a traditional student, will matriculate right after finishing senior year in undergrad. I am white, normal range SES, no particular hardships. Very well written Personal statement, and fairly adequate work/ activities section. well rounded overall

Year in school: Summer after junior year with Senior credit standing (105) Currently I am in an Undergraduate summer research fellowship grant work program

Cumulative/Science GPA: 3.67/3.88 (yes sGPA is much higher, my non-sGPA from freshman year was around 2.1) Strong upward trend.

MCAT: 509- 82%ile

Research – 2 posters (1 first auth, 1 second auth) in a neuroscience lab in the College of medicine on my campus, will be first author on a paper in the next 2 months, and second author on another paper in the next 1 to 3 months. over 400 hours thus far, likely 800 by matriculation. Considered paid work, and lab/research work.(the fellowship is a paid grant.)

Volunteering (clinical) – ~50 hours in the hospital PACU ~400 hours at chemo center

Physician shadowing – 200 hours at one specialty hospital surgery service. -150 hours local hospital, various areas and local physician offices

Non-clinical volunteering: ~150 hours nature/environmental education center

Employment history:~ 200 hours clinical pharmacy tech ~250 hours in research lab (fellowship)

Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n) none

Country/state of residence: New York

Schools to which I am applying:

Reach: Cornell, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, New York University, Harvard, Yale.

Not sure where my other schools fit in, in terms of target/ safety. Do I have adequate safety schools? I have no desire to apply DO, I have nothing against DO's, but I have no propensity for osteopathic medicine, and also would like to avoid the Caribbean at all costs.

How many schools do you want to trim your list down to?

A lot of these public schools still have low OOS numbers (like OHSU, Washington, Louisville, probably more), specific missions (like Uniformed Services University of the Health Scien) and Northstate is, well, Northstate. Would have been easier to list the schools that aren't on your list.

The majority of your schools on your list are totally unrealistic with your stats. These schools are reasonable choices

Dude...you need to calm down. Your list is totally unrealistic, start by picking schools that fit your metrics. Shoot for about 25-30. Than research every schools criteria as to what they are looking for in their candidates. Don't be surprised if your list comes down to about 15-20 best schools. This will keep you sane and give you the best shoot at preparing your secondaries. While med school admissions is a crap shoot but still you want to put your best foot forward. Good luck.

Cut the Bolded schools above.

1) With your stats and ECs you have roughly a 0.001% chance of getting into Harvard, Hopkins, Stanford, Yale, etc...
2) Many of the schools on your list except only a handful OOS students who have significant ties to the state.
3) A few schools on your list are traditionally URM schools who accept mostly URMs.
3) Only apply to USUHS if you're fine with being in the military for the next 10 years.
