  1. Pre-Pharmacy

Hello, I recently joined this web site.
I am majoring pre-pharmacy and biochemistry(major starts next semester).
The problem is my GPA was horrible. For the first semester, I didn't have any goal. Also, I couldn't adopt the university life, and I was lost. My first grade of semester were so so so bad. (had D and F). After the shock, I try to make that up through summer semester and not I have 2.6 GPA. For sure, I will bring that up the rest of semester. However, I really feel bad about my preveous grades.'What if that affect?' I am trying to do anything I can do (volunteer at hospital pharmacy).
Are there any students who had similar experience with me amomg the admitted student?
How did you make that up? (i.e P.C.A.T)
Do you think which one is better between keeping biochemistry major OR changing into easy major(so I can get better GPA)?
This semester, I know what I want to be.
I hope it's not too late.

p.s I am planing to apply pharmacy school 2009 Fall.

Thank you!

2.9 is bad but just continually improve.. when i say improve.. i mean IMPROVE DRASTICALLY!!!
4.0 all the way~! they will see that you improved and that actually looks better than someone who always had 4.0 and then started to slack off!
good luck!

you're right. upward trend is always good. Also, maintaining a 4.0 is difficult, especially when you get into upper level courses. If you mean get a 3.0 after getting 4.0 for a year or so as slacking off then, sure, that's not good. But I think staying around 3.7-3.8 after getting 4.0s is okay.

Similar situation here, bad grades first semester due to a depression issue and just trying to deal with the adjustment into college. Now I'm on "academic probation" for this semester and have raise my GPA or get kicked out. 🙄 Obviously NOT an option. Since last semester I've gotten it together a lot more and am looking forward to my next semesters in college. Like you I am going to be doing 2 summers worth of classes as well as full time semesters. That's to get not only caught up to where I need to be but also to expedite the bringing up of my GPA.

I don't think at all that it's too late to fix this. I've had to think really hard on this since it's my situation as well and have figured that a good course of action are these things:

  • Work really hard and stay on track, eg. attend class regularly, do work on time, don't give up!
  • Get certified as a pharm tech and get a job doing that to gain experience and possibly recommendations.
  • Find ways to volunteer that is not only meaningful to me but also is meaningful to admissions.
  • Study HARD for the PCAT. None of that "night before crunching"!
  • Retake PCAT if needed.
Basically what I'm saying is that it's not over, you'll be looked upon better if from here you show progress rather than continued regression. Your 2.9 is low for the adcoms to accept but it's still early, you can raise that. Work hard, refine your study habits and go for it. 👍

On the subject of changing a major to an easier one... if you are truly interested in biochem then leave it and work hard. If you aren't committed to that major then take a look at the possibility of biology or something. Everyone is different and some topics will be better for some than others. Maybe biochem isn't your thing, maybe it is, keep your options open. I'm a big fan of making lists to help me decide things and also to get a better perspective on things, you might want to do that and look at the pros and cons of each major you are considering. You might find a hidden treasure in there with one. Maybe chem isn't your best option.

Welcome by the way! 😀

that is good advice 👍

and I like your sig. pharmgrl5 for some reason. the whole "1 semester down, 5 to go!" seems like you're really excited about it all and that's great 🙂 I am also super excited about it all. Hyped up about taking the pharmacy technician certification exam during spring break and then the PCAT in June. So stressful yet so excited! 😀 For me though, if things go well, 3 semesters down, 3 to go 🙂

Good luck!
