so i go to a quarter system school where my gchem units convert to 7.4 ... for schools that require 8 units is this ok? can i include biochem into g chem???

Shouldn't you have 3 gchem classes in a quarter system? Even with each being 2.7 units, you'd have more than enough.

we have 2, 4 unit chem classes and 1, 3 unit lab ....

You are probably missing something....UCLA isn't a tiny school and there have been thousands of premeds go on to medical school from there. I suggest double checking...if you have any questions about that stuff ask an advisor. I have a hard time believing that if you took all the general chemistry and the lab you're going to have issues...

ive taken all the gchem that u can take ... ive seen the couselors ... when u covert gchem from quarter system you get 7.34units ... o chem you get 8.01 .... so my gchem is just shy of 8

Email the schools you applied to and explain, ask if it's sufficient to count. I was in a similar situation (took gchem I on quarters, gchem II on semesters), and the schools I applied to said that I had met their requirement when I emailed. I asked all the schools that invited me to submit secondaries.

I have a similar issue, and my advisor told me that schools will count biochem towards the general chemistry quota.

Stanford, also on the quarter system, has 2 4 quarter gchem classes (or 1 4 unit accelerated gchem class) and 1 3 unit lab.

yea i go to ucla too and i was calculating the gchem units and it was like 7.4 and i was like.... u gotta be kidding. We send out the most pre-meds and yet our life science chem series doesnt even cover 8 unit req? Hopefully schools will accept biochem... but I asked Pittsburgh and they Don't. Sux

I'm actually in a similar situation except I only have 5 hours of gen chem.. I took a year of pchem hopefully that counts haha.

Hey guys,

I'm also from UCLA, and I came across the same problem last month while filling out my secondaries. From the looks of it, you probably took the Chem 14 series like I did, and for god knows what reason, Chem 14BL is only 3 units! Anyways, I called some of the schools (I remember Dartmouth & Pitt, specifically), and they are well aware of UCLA's series (since I guess UCLA generates a lot of med applicants every year).

For the general chem. category, Dartmouth told me to include 14A, 14BL, Biochem. 153A, and Biochem. 153L (weird, I know). For organic chem, put down: 14B, 14C, 14D, 14CL.

The lady from Pitt basically said "ah yes...UCLA has that weird chem series. you're fine. just submit it."

Since it really depends on the school, just give them a call. Just wanted to let you know that this is not a big deal & don't stress out too much. After all, most pre-meds at UCLA take the wussy 14 series instead of 20, so I'm sure all the schools have seen it already. 👍
