hello everyone,
you guys wouldnt mind if i borrowed a minute of your time will you? i'm starting to lose hope on things...

my dat scores:
19 ts [bio 18/chem 17/orgo 20]
19 aa
21 pat
17 qr

my gpa:3.16
sci gpa:3.21

i received three rejection letters: maryland, nyu, uconn and i am starting to lose hope in my chances into dental school. i still havent heard from stony, buff (continuing review), columbia, tuft, boston, and nj.

is there even a chance for me to get into my remaining dental schools?

and if not: should i retake my DATs (never a bad idea), go to grad, or stay in undergrad to boost my gpa even more?

thanks for everyones time...😳

Stay in undergrad and boost your gpa...may want to retake the DAT too. Your DATs are not bad, but your GPA kinda is and coupled together it doesn't look good.

Don't give up yet. There will be positions opening up during the second round. Based on everything I've heard (I'm in a similar situation), you still have a chance of getting in this year. I have one interview set up in January, and was given the impression that I'll be getting another in January. Hang in there, and good luck!

Raise your DAT score if you can and stay in your undergrad program in you can. Make sure that you apply to temple and nyu. They both are number schools (I know Temple is for sure).

Did you list your AADSAS GPA or your schools GPA?

those are my aadsas gpa. my school gpa is 3.0 overall and 3.17 sci gpa.

TS calculation can be weird. It is supposed to be the weighted average of bio, gc and oc. I had a 22, 23 and 29 on bio, gc and oc respectively and my TS came out to be a 23.

its not the average of all 3 sciences.
it's the number of questions you get right out of 100 that gives u the TS.

Your GPA is not that great. Unless you have a 21 AA or better I don't think you'll have that great of a chance to get in. If I were you I would first retake the DAT.... If you get a 21AA or better I would just apply early and take a few more undergrad science classes to show your trying to improve your GPA. If you get a 18-20AA I would strongly consider doing a one year masters program. However, if your a minority your good with a 18AA with your current GPA. Whatever you do, if you don't get in this year, apply in May next year. Good luck on everything!!

Pretty sure that a masters program doesn't count towards your GPA b/c it is not undergrad...if this is actually true then it would be more beneficial to just stay in undergrad for a bit...

Yeah a masters program will not count towards your undergrad GPA. But if he rocks a masters program, say a 3.7 or better, he would get in for sure with his current DAT!

How early did you apply? Staying in undergrad to boost your gpa isnt such a great idea considering the fact that its hard to boost your gpa with 100+ credits racked up. You'd have to get like 5 or 6 A's to make a significant change in your gpa. Post bac programs are a good option, of course if you can just retake ur DAT and get a 22+ that would be the best option (easier said than done i know, but just study ur a** off). And also apply as early as you can (may/june).

i finished my apps on aug 1st...

if i were to re apply, do i reapply in the '09 cycle? or do i reappy in the '10 cycle?

im assuming most of you are suggesting i retake the DAT, do a post bac after i graduate and re apply in the '10 cycle so the schools can see improvements. but that puts me 2 years behind doesnt it?

If you retake your DATs and score 21-22 i think you have a fair shot at making it into dental school for the class of 2013. You just have to make sure your application is in early. I was on predents and i saw a guy with a 2.9 gpa and 21 DAT make it to NYU, so i think you would have a fair shot. If you end up scoring a 19 or a 20 again on the retake then you should definitely be looking into a masters program.

at the moment ive planned out my future like this:

-retake DATs - get around 21-23 reapply in the '09 cycle on may.

-retake DATs - get same score as my first test - then i would have to ace my spring , summer, and fall semester undergrads classes. depending on how my gpa looks then, i'll decide whether i should apply for the master program and get those gre scores in....

anyway thats what i got so far. thanks for everyone's advice. i really appreciate it. i know getting there wont be easy so i'm up for this challenge. thanks again everyone.

As for the Master's there are programs that will accept your DAT scores in place of the GRE. You may have to relocate depending on your current residence. On that comes to mind is Barry University, Master's in Biomedical sciences aimed to gain admission into medical or dental school. I agree with everyone that your best option would be to continue as an undergrad and boost that gpa.

Good Luck!!
