I have a question regarding changing residencies. I am a PGY1 and will need to move for my PGY2 year, due to my husbands work in a different city.

From what I have heard the best way to is to have the PD call the residencies in the city where I need to move. Is this a true statement?

Do I still need to go through ERAS for PGY2, even if the PD makes the arrangements (Calls)?

When is the proper time to tell my PD that I will need to move (change residency)?

Thank you in advance for the help.

You should let your current PD know as soon as possible about the move.

Since you would be considered an independent candidate, I believe you are still eligible to sign a contract outside of the match. However, you may still wish to enroll in the NRMP because nothing is guaranteed and if you don't have a signed contract in your hand before the match, you may be out of luck.

If you have your PD's support, he may well assist you in finding an open position, but you would still likely have to interview, ie, get the position on your own.

best of luck to you...

Thanks for your input. I have a great relationship with the folks in my program. The PD loves me and I believe would be willing to help me.

My worry is, what if I do not get another residency for PGY2, and I have to stay here in my current residency? I am a bit reluctant to say anything to my PD, in case I do not match anyplace else. My husband and I could work it out so he can commute.

Once I tell my PD I need to leave, do they begin their search for the spot I am leaving open? What if I do not gain a pgy2 spot at another program? Will I be able to stay in my current program, or once I tell them I am leaving it is ?final??

Well, since you have a great relationship with your current PD, discuss it with him or her. Im sure they'll want to fill your spot on the chance you might leave, but would love to have you stay if you don't match. However, you can't have it both ways.

Therefore, lets say you don't get an early offer to sign outside of the match, then you'll have to participate in the NRMP. If you interview at a place(s) in the same town as your husband, you would rank them highest (provided you liked those programs) and your current program after those programs. Hopefully this will result in you matching at 1 of these two options.

Right, I understand. I will talk to my PD ASAP. I'm just a bit scared that I will not have a PGY2 spot in either location(Here or There)....

That could conceivably happen, but if you truly have a good relationship with your PD and he's honest with you, you should be ranked highly by them and hopefully have a spot there next year should nto you get one elsewhere.
