Hello! I have a friend who is interested in applying for next year cycle for a MOT program. Something we end up discussing is it "easier" for male applicants to be accepted to an OT program, due to the lack of male in this field. It's been a rumor that's been flying around and I actually wanted to hear it from pre-OT or Ot. Sorry to sound so naive haha.

Another thing, I am helping my friend in the process of MOT. I am a current DPT applicant and Since I feel like the process is a bit similar, I told him to:

1) Check each school for their requirements
2) Do well in the GRE (differ from each school)
3) Obtain a Solid GPA - overall above 3.0 (differ from each school)
4) Get a lot of observation hours - LoR
5) Apply early
6) Keep in contact with schools

tips and advices will be great!!

Hope you guys can help! Thank you!

I wouldn't bank too much on being a male. I can't really claim to know how admissions to some programs work but there are many competitive applicants. I think just being a guy isn't going to bring much to the application. Besides focusing on numbers, I would try to find and develop unique experiences to talk about in personal statements and interviews. Really know why he wants to be an occupational therapist.

More male ots would be great though.

I was told by a female OT who had recently graduated that me being a male would be beneficial for me being accepted. However, out of the three schools I have been interviewed, two have wait listed me and I was accepted to another, and I have a ~3.75 GPA! Definitely don't think being a male was a contributing factor! In fact, I would venture to say that as a male you might even have to try harder and shine in different areas since most admissions committees are used to what a female OT would bring to the table. From my experience this year, my biggest suggestion would be to get as many observation hours as possible - at least 100.
