Help! Urgent question about Davis interview orientation.

So the check engine light on my car just came on as I was about to leave for Davis (7 hour drive for me). I'm debating whether to rent a car and make the drive up or just watch the webcast of the interview workshop (which I have playing in the background now) and schedule a campus tour for my interview date.

What goes on in the afternoon, other than the tour, that I will miss if I don't come up this weekend?

The tour that you get with the interviewee orientation is much better than the one you will get just signing up for a campus tour. The two aren't really the same at all.

The presentation about the school and financial aid and such are alright. Pretty standard stuff, but it gives you a good idea of what they're about and an opportunity to ask questions. I liked it because they are generally pretty quiet about the whole process and I felt like it added to my perception of the place in general, if that makes any sense.

I think the interview workshop is great. I can't remember all of what went on last year (sorry, I've jettisoned some of that information in favor of anatomical terms), but I know that the highlights that still stick with me are the whole portion where they talk at you (not just the panel of 1st years, but also the part where Dr. LeFebvre, Dr. Jones, and admissions folks speak--not sure if all of that is podcast) and the tour, of course. I'm sure there were other stand out points, but I don't recall them.

I would say, too, that if you have a student host, I'm sure they'd be willing to give you a tour when you're up here for your interview. That should be totally sufficient...you're not looking for the history of various things, just what it's like to be in these facilities as a student. And if you don't have a host or they're not willing to give you a tour, I'd be happy to, just drop me a PM.

It was pretty accurate if I recall correctly.

I may wander over to the workshop portion (the one that isn't just for interviewees) if I'm over in the lab at that point anyway.

A word of advice on the car....oftentimes the check engine light is related to oxygen sensors or some other item that is not a threat to engine health. You can go by auto-zone or most any autoparts place, they'll read the computer code for free, then you'll know if it is ok to make the drive.

And another thing that makes you feel really dumb if its the problem - if you don't screw your gas cap on all the way, that will make your check engine light go on. Its always worth checking the easiest fix first.

Another question before tomorrow...
When I visited other schools, parents usually came to the tour and info sessions. Are parents invited tomorrow? My feeling is no, but I just wanted to check.

The hopeful candidate letter says that 'interviewee orientation' (1-5) is for interviewees only (not enough room for guests). Hope this helps!

Yup, Autozone read my code for free....It may be something as silly as a loose gas cap...I am the queen of check engine lights...I hate seeing that damn yellow light on whenever I'm driving..2/4 of my cylinders tend to misfire when it rains...likely spark plug issue..just haven't gotten it looked at...and yeah my check engine will be on there until I put a good amount of mileage on it for it to clear .. then once it misfires again that lovely light will be on for another month......ugh...

I think you should get the code read in case it is something silly.
