  1. Pre-Pharmacy

aloha! newbie from hawaii here 😀 anyway, i'm a senior in highschool and i am sooooo so eager to know what path you'd best recommend me taking as i really would love to become a pharmacist in the future. although, not the brightest student in both my calculus/ ap chemistry classes 🙄 still... was fortunate enough to atleast average an a- in both subjects. for the moment, i've been really thinking about pursuing a bs in pharmacology/ toxicology oooor even a bs in biochemistry. but, i don't know... what do you think i should do? or do you have an even better approach for me? thanks everybody! an much mahalo to you and yours 😍

i would recommend studying whatever interests you the most. from your pre-requisites, you'll take all of the math and science classes you need for pharmacy school, so everything else can be whatever you want to study. if you like pharmacology/toxicology, then study that and it might show you that you're really interested in pharmacy or maybe not.

if you major in biochemistry, you'll have enough of a chemistry background for pharmacy school, and if you do research in that field, you'll get to see some of the experiments that can be used to study mechanisms of action with drugs.

personally, i would pick biochemistry, but that's only because i was a chemistry major in college.

cheapest route: community college, get all pre-reqs done with really strong grades. Apply to a state pharmacy school.

On the other hand, pick one of your stated majors you like and get a four year degree. Make sure you meet all pre-reqs for programs at schools of your interest. This route increases your chances for landing a seat considerably, however, an inverse relationship with the weight of your wallet exists.

good luck

Pharmacy is saturated. I'd suggest going to HVAC school and getting your PhD in residential AC

sorry! guys i ment to reply yesturday. but, was too busy with homework 🙁

hey crazy[crazybob] ^ ^ ok, biochemistry, it is and thank you so very much 😀

hey balls[eightball] ^ ^ oh, i'm definitely gonna take the c.c. route[prerequisites/ kapiolani community college]. then pursue a BS in biochemistry[or a double major?], either from hawaii pacific university[since it's closer to my home] orrrr the university of hawaii- manoa =/ do a ton of volutary work in between at kaiser permanente, since both my mother and sister are nurses there[CRNA/ LPN]. THEN! i'll take a crack at pharm school and see what happens. ooh yeah, as for the weigh of my wallet? thanks, DAD!!! :biglove:

hey doc[drwong] ^ ^ you know, that's not so bad of an idea, considering[hmm]. unfortunately though, it's just not my cup of tea, sorry =/ i do agree with you by the way in that pharmacy is indeed saturated[like most in the med field]. but, a wise man once said? "...opportunities are seldom in life and if you don't make the best of it, it'll pass you bye..." so, on that note... i'd feel awhole lot better just knowing that if i am ever lucky enough to be in a position. let alone a pharmacist someday, that i atleast will not only be ready for it. but, also qualified! and have the credentials to back it up[SIGHS] well, that's the spirit any how  so yeah, despite the market or what anyone has to say, i'm going to prepare myself for that opportunity nonetheless.

Well, it sounds like you have life all planned out and have a firm grasp of what you want to do with your life....that's admirable. And, of course, I was just joking about a PhD is HVAC school.

I guess just follow your heart.
Best of luck

Your mom and sister works at Kaiser? You are so lucky. The last time I applied there, I tried to give my application to the pharmacist but one of the pharm tech was so mean to me, anyways that is not the point. you should be a paid pharmacy technician!!!!

Also, when you have a chance, take a course to prepare and take the PTCE (pharmacy technician certification exam) so you have another credential to tell to the board of pharmacy school during the interview. Please read my blogs for more information.

A lot of people are going to flame me saying that the course is expensive but mine was taught by a 20 + years experience as pharmacy technician in the Navy and 15+ more years as pharmacist. I learned so much from him and very happy I went through this.

Good luck!

I'm not going to flame you. I'd simply point out that the tech who read a book and passed the exam is just as much a tech on paper as the one who paid thousands for a course.

If your end goal is to be a pharmacist, there are better things you can do with that few thousand bucks. Like: pay rent, eat, etc.

I will have to agree that the two things (either study by yourself or take a course) can make a person certified but I am talking about quality not quantity.

Lets start a discussion. Here is a question for you....since my course was only $800, you would rather pay one month of rent than learn about the PTCE from a pharmacist that might affect your future?

When I first took the course, I had no clue what I wanted to do in life. When I finished the course, I thought about the course I took and declared my major to pre-pharmacy. I am already in my second year as pre-pharmacy major with a 3.209 gpa.

I learned very early in my life that money doesn't always make you happy, it is the experience that you went through makes you happy.

My rent is $1,600, but I'm not sure how that affects your hypothetical question. Just pointing out that not everyone lives in such an inexpensive area. Additionally, the cheapest program in California is $1,300, and it's not even a brick and mortar place - Sierra College does an online thing where they provide 'externships' at the end - A gal in my last Orgo class was in one.

Anyway, I guess it comes down to what you want to do.

For me, going to the classes for X months at a more or less full-time pace would've pushed my finishing of pre-requisites back further and essentially, I got the same job at a pharmacy that anyone who paid money for the course did. And additionally, when I'm a P1, my intern license will supercede my CPhT, just like it'll supersede yours, turning your $800 into a complete waste (As you likely could've landed a job anyway - I did, in the single crappiest economy in the entire damn blessed union).

But hey, diff'rent strokes. If you're happy with the program and you felt it will make you a better pharmacist or whatnot, no one should deride you personally for it. They may think you're silly for spending the money, but people use money on silly stuff all the time and never think twice of it.

The going rate for our local CPhT program is $6000.

I kid you not.

I feel terrible, because the pre-pharmers really lay into the people who do this program. If you're not just trying to get experience for pharmacy school, and you're doing this as a career, then go for it.

But the salary (sic) of a CPhT is not really conducive to paying off that six grand any time soon.

And, as P4Sci said, it takes time. Personally, I'm on a tight schedule to make sure I can enter in the Fall of 2010 (knock on wood). I'm working, going to school, and active in school clubs and the Freemasons. I don't have the time or money to waste (which is what it would be) on a CPhT class.

$6000. I tell ya... It oughtta be a crime.

Alright, since you both posted similar responses, I am giving you one response.

Both posts says too much money. I can't really deal with that. I don't live in California or Texas. I live in Colorado and I don't need to be renting the most expensive property to show off my friends. It is really too bad that both of you pay so much for rent. There are a lot of rental properties here in Colorado that is going for $500 a month. I am sure California and Texas too, if you just shop. Anyways, I shopped when I was looking for pharmacy technician classes too. I don't look for the most expensive schools, I look for who is teaching the courses. If the professor has a pharm.D. then I just go to the course and learn from him or her. Also, it is not my fault that you guys have more expensive schools like California has a pharmacy technician license law so it is more money and that is just too bad for you.

Why are you guys always trying to talk about me or yourselves? Why aren't we helping the OP? I found her courses in Hawaii going for $400 each. She can take the beginner's course to just get a feel for it and experience. These courses are taught by a real pharmD not some student studying alone.

Phillip Tagariello, Pharm.D.

http://programs.kcc.hawaii.edu/health/pharm/index.htm

I can't really look for more schools because I don't know where the OP lives, so she will need to research or google it.

I really do admire you for posting this paragraph:

"For me, going to the classes for X months at a more or less full-time pace would've pushed my finishing of pre-requisites back further and essentially, I got the same job at a pharmacy that anyone who paid money for the course did. And additionally, when I'm a P1, my intern license will supercede my CPhT, just like it'll supersede yours, turning your $800 into a complete waste (As you likely could've landed a job anyway - I did, in the single crappiest economy in the entire damn blessed union)."

Well guess what? I did not take the courses during college. I took it before I went to college so I can declare my major. The OP is in HIGH SCHOOL. She still has a chance to do the courses before college and I recommended the OP to do it so she knows what the pharmacy is all about. That is all I am asking her. I am not talking about both of you. I am talking about the OP. I do tell everyone to take the courses, but since you guys don't have time, don't do it then.

Now read the bolded sentence in that paragraph again. How are you going to get those pharmacy internships? You still have to apply to those companies again, don't you? Don't you want a big resume with full of credentials and schools attended so you can compete with your classmate that might be looking for that same job? Also the companies would love to hire qualified people in the pharmacy so then the customers will be more satisfied.

One last thing....not everyone can get a job so I know one of you are going to say that you will advance to pharmacy intern in your company when you get in pharmacy school. Great job. I am happy for you but what if we don't want to work now and that the students rather study more to get good grades or what if someone can't find one because the pharmacies are looking for full time only? That is why the students need to have a good resume so the students can find a pharmacy intern job.

PTCE? oh, i will definitely! do that also and currently have 2 books to prepare for it[mosby's review and 2009 edition, 840 PTCE/ PTCB pharmacy technician certification national exam questions with rationale]. 35+ years in pharmacy? wow! now that's experience we could all learn a thing or two from eh[especially! hey again! pr33st[pharm b] ^ ^ omg! $6,000, definitely! is as much a crime as CPhT pay. i mean, you might as well work at mcdonalds for that[no offense!!!]. just my opinion, based on what i seen on paper and i'm sure alot of you would agree as well eh?

I was going to reply, then I realized that doing so, like your CPhT course, would be a waste of time.

P.S. - Zombieland was really good.

hey sci[passion4sci] ^ ^ aww, come on, that is sooo mean :nono: but, as for zombieland? i must say, my favorite parts was definitely watching woody go ape **** over some dam twinkie 🤣

hey d[pharmd321], i've been having mixed reviews lately as i've been hearing that most retail pharmacist, would much prefer to hire some girl/boy, with good data entry skills. instead of an actual certified pharm tech[less pay for the same job i suppose]. so, my question to you is, would it be wise of me to just take the PTCE, and get certified first? or should i apply as a clerk and get certified through the pharmacy instead? thanks! d 😍

PharmD321, I'm not trying to make you defensive and I wasn't just talking to P4Sci. I genuinely forgot the OP was still in high school. I didn't once mention rental prices, I was just giving the staggering figure for tuition in the local CPhT program. In other areas, maybe it's not as much of a raw deal. But here, it's laughable.

I'm done here.

One last piece of advice: you're on the right track with that online course (if you do one at all). The most important thing is for you to see what courses you're going to need to take in the next two years (following high school) to get into the SOP of your choice. Once you know what courses you need, you'll have to figure out when to take them.

Ex: You'll need two years of biology and two years of chem, so that's 2 slots filled in 4 semesters right there, etc

hey sci[passion4sci] ^ ^ aww, come on, that is sooo mean

You haven't been here long...

but, as for zombieland? i must say, my favorite parts was definitely watching woody go ape **** over some dam twinkie

That was pretty good, especially since he's skinny as a rail. Cognitive dissonance is a lovely thing. Someone sees a fat guy eating a twinkie and automatically assumes the worst, but when you see a skinny guy (hi, metabolism) eating a twinkie, you assume he has earned it. Kinda funny, the human psyche.

My favorite part was the theater-scene where that one guy got shot. (you know what I mean if you've seen it - I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't).

LOL, it was a longgg time ago (a year ago) and yes the pharm tech at Kaiser was a girl and she was like, "the manager doesn't want to see you, bye." Even though I asked her in a politely that I wanted to speak with the manager and introduce myself. It was an automatic response too, she didn't even go ask the manager if he or she wanted to see me.....

I am glad to hear that you are going to take classes to get the pharmacy technician diploma. I am proud of you for taking such good choices! How are the books going? Is the Mosley book any good? I haven't read those books before....

 you are a big football fan, aren't you? You are like my girlfriend, keeping up with the football season while I been shut out of society for hours doing my homework. The Texans (4-0) will whip the buffs (1-3) butt tonight for sure. That is so cool your brother was a huskie and a three time champ? Damnnnn....and nebraska is doing very well this season. Yeah the last game with colorado will be interesting. Sorry for the boring question lol....what degree did your brother get at Nebraska?

hey d[pharmd321], i've been having mixed reviews lately as i've been hearing that most retail pharmacist, would much prefer to hire some girl/boy, with good data entry skills. instead of an actual certified pharm tech[less pay for the same job i suppose]. so, my question to you is, would it be wise of me to just take the PTCE, and get certified first? or should i apply as a clerk and get certified through the pharmacy instead? thanks! d 😍

Actually, you are correct about that, the job might be easier to find without certification. But the Kaiser here in Colorado only accept people with certification so I don't think it applies to all pharmacies. You can try though because Hawaii might be different. I forgot to tell you that the companies will reimburse your pharmacy technician exam fees if you work at Safeway, Kings, Walmart, Costco, or any other retail pharmacies.

PharmD321, I'm not trying to make you defensive and I wasn't just talking to P4Sci. I genuinely forgot the OP was still in high school. Alright, good enough explanation. I understand about the expensive schools and sorry if I got a little out of hand, I was only trying to prove my point, and the OP got my message so now everyone is happy 🙂.

thanks! b[pharm b] ^ ^ i really appreciate it and i hope i didn't offend you with me previous comment 🙁 hey! i had a question for you, considering your ex:... okay, if i currently have both ap biology and ap chemistry, in highschool. does it even count as far as my college prereq's for pharm school =/:xf:?

You should call the schools directly and ask them. I've never dealt with AP credit (been out of school for long enough that it wouldn't count). I don't know if the SOP would say "okay, BIO 1 credits achieved" or if they'd want you to at least take a college level biology lab credit (the 1 hour).

(hopefully someone on here knows the general rule regarding AP credits and pharm school)

You haven't been here long...

I am glad to hear that you are going to take classes to get the pharmacy technician diploma. I am proud of you for taking such good choices! How are the books going? Is the Mosley book any good? I haven't read those books before.....

aww thanks! for the admiration d and please! be sure it is indeed! much appreciated ^ ^ oh, actually i'm already taking classes online. now as for the books? omg! in between my highschool studies[ap classes] and online courses[pharm tech]. it's REALLY hard to make time for the moment =/ but, what i can say is that, i bought the book not only because it was recommended by most pharm techs, that i came across. but, because the book is actually written a RPh in author: james j. mizner. so yeah, that was more than enough of an incentive to go and get it.i haven't read the whole book yet, to be honest =/ but, still found this text to be very helpful as a review guide for people[like ME!], interested in taking the PTCB examination. it is very detail oriented and explains each section of the exam so you can understand. it has many practice exams which is always! helpful, and explains the rationale for the answers. in my opinion, this definitely! is an excellent study aid for anyone planning to take the PTCB exam. actually, there's also another one, that's been gaining popularity lately called? the pharmacy technician, by: perspective press[wtf!]. but, i dunno =/ it's a bit pricy though[around $50], in comparison to mosby's review[$35].

 you are a big football fan, aren't you? You are like my girlfriend, keeping up with the football season while I been shut out of society for hours doing my homework. The Texans (4-0) will whip the buffs (1-3) butt tonight for sure. That is so cool your brother was a huskie and a three time champ? Damnnnn....and nebraska is doing very well this season. Yeah the last game with colorado will be interesting. Sorry for the boring question lol....what degree did your brother get at Nebraska?

oh definitely! although i much prefer college than professional ball. well, because from what i hear pro football, tends to be rigged most of the time. not saying that it doesn't happen in college. but, obviously there's alot more money involved there eh? so yeah... now as for you being shut out of society for hours doing homework? ooh, i think i know alittle about that ^ ^ although, i'll gladly admit that my studies aren't nearly as severe as yours 😀 by the way... for a moment i thought your prediction was a bit premature[Texans (4-0) will whip the buffs (1-3) butt tonight for sure]. well, atleast after the first half, when the buffs, were up 14-10. but, in the end, you were right nonetheless. after watching, i must say that they had their fair share of chances, just couldn't capitalize in the redzone, unfortunately =/ it's okay though... we'll take care of them for you guys in the big 12 championship  naaaaah, just kidding ^ ^ but, it's possible considering where the two are for the moment. still a long season though =/ oh and as for my brother? yeah, it's pretty cool ^ ^ you know, i remember when i was 5 and my brother was a sophemore in college then. but, anyway... some of my friends at the time had never met him before. so, after they smashed florida[62-24], to win the national championship in 95' he flew home a few days later and i remember the look of shock on their faces when he stepped off the plane, well, because he was a really big dude, you know[6'7-330lbs] and not fat! but, like... what is that mma fighters name? the ufc heavyweight champion? YEAH, brock lesnar. he was like that! some freak of nature. but, anyway... he also played for the pittsburgh steelers from 98'-00' then called it quits after a season ending knee injury. well, actually his wife had a say in it and i don't blame her. i mean, she loves my brother very much and they also have two kids to think of. so yeah, it was a no brainer for him. but, inside? i know his only lying to himself. especially! nowadays given that the steelers have won 2 of the last 4 superbowls. OH! and before i forget? he has an MS in nutrition and health sciences[dietetics], and if i'm not mistaken =/ i think he's also pursuing an MBA in finance[online though], through the university of nebraska[not sure].

Actually, you are correct about that, the job might be easier to find without certification. But the Kaiser here in Colorado only accept people with certification so I don't think it applies to all pharmacies. You can try though because Hawaii might be different. I forgot to tell you that the companies will reimburse your pharmacy technician exam fees if you work at Safeway, Kings, Walmart, Costco, or any other retail pharmacies..

i though so =/ ooh, it's the same here also[kaiser/ certified pharm techs only]. unfortunately, and many thanks to our declining economy. they're not hiring for the moment. but, diane[one of the pharmacist], said she'll let me know as she knows both my mother and sister very well. in the mean time, she welcomed me to volunteer anytime. 😀

LOL, I would pay to watch that 🙂

I need to go see that Mosby's review, it sounds good. Also, I heard about the pharmacy technician one, the Amazon reviews all said positive, no negative. That must be good too. I was so lucky because my professor was the one that made the book and it was extremely helpful! Also, I can remember things that he said when I read that book.

I knew it, the longhorns whipped the buffs. I missed it because I was doing the history homework and studying the bio one mid term exam this coming monday...🙁

Haha, your brother is similar to Brock Lesnar? Yeah right, your brother is a monster! Brock is 6'3 and 265 lbs, thats 65 lbs more 😱

That is good he got a MS in nutrition and health science...why the MBA? Is he opening his own business or does he want to work for a big company?

One lady customer gave me a very important advice, she said for me to keep working at Walmart, but apply to all other stores to get the pharmacy technician position. I didn't do that because I loved my job and boss way too much and I regretted so much. I also still have no pharmacy technician experience and I am like 2-3 years from getting my degree. If I were you, volunteer for Kaiser, but apply to all other jobs so then you don't have to rely on Kaiser giving you a job. Also, it will make your resume look really nice!

You should call the schools directly and ask them. I've never dealt with AP credit (been out of school for long enough that it wouldn't count). I don't know if the SOP would say "okay, BIO 1 credits achieved" or if they'd want you to at least take a college level biology lab credit (the 1 hour).

(hopefully someone on here knows the general rule regarding AP credits and pharm school)

oh okay, i will, thanks! pr33st 😀

LOL, I would pay to watch that 🙂

oh really! wait let me put my hair up first... okay, i'm done. headed there now! meet me in 5[this b**** is mine!]?

yeah, go and get it. i'm sure it's an investment[$35 *haha*], well worth it.

aww, that sucks! you know, it would have definitely! been a different game, if only colorado made the best of their opportunities in the redzone[scored!]. buuut, it is what it is... oh well =/

Haha, your brother is similar to Brock Lesnar? Yeah right, your brother is a monster! Brock is 6'3 and 265 lbs, thats 65 lbs more 😱

not anymore. well, he's still a big dude, just not as big as he use to be[more ripped]. yeah, my brother works as a dietician[nutritionist] and has since trimmed down to a lean 245lbs 🙄

That is good he got a MS in nutrition and health science...why the MBA? Is he opening his own business or does he want to work for a big company?

well, his intent like most americans, previously was to start his own business. i dunno what though =/ i think some sports nutrition company, like GNC. buuut, it's definitely! NOT gonna happen anytime soon[no, not the economy... the wifey ^ ^]. actually, SHE already has her MBA and makes more money than my brother 🤣 yeah, she works in big oil[management/ chevron] and makes well in the 6 figures. you know what's funny though? she STILL drives her 1995 "HONDA", to work[no tint, no rims, bone stock]. i mean, with ALL that money, you would think she'd buy a mercedes, bmw, escalade, hummer or a range rover, for crying out loud. i thought it had alot to do with sentimental value, because it was her first car that her dad bought for her. but, when i asked her that, she told me? "...sometimes, it's better to know you have it, then to wear it out...", followed by? "...when you can distinguish a want, from a need? you will always have money when you need it most...". but, anyway... looks like my brother will be sticking to his dietician job for the moment. actually, i think he really wants to do BOTH! but, nows just not a good time. well... according to the warden[wife]

ooh, so what do you do at walmart? hmm... sounds like i'm not the ONLY one who could use some volunteer work in pharmacy right about now eh? well, like YOU said? "...it will make your resume look really nice!..." 👍
