Help with Campus Visits

Hi All!

I'm in the process of visiting schools right now and I wanted to ask all of you to give me some suggestions as to what the proper etiquette for a campus visit is (EX. Do I try to meet with admissions officers, profs, students? Do I go in with pre-learned knowledge about the school?). As for questions, I have only been able to come up with asking about teaching styles, profs, and amount of clinical work students can get. Anything else you think I should find out about the schools? I'll be visiting Baylor and Houston soon, so all of you Texans a little help? Thanks to all of you and congrats to all of you accepted! I hope I will be among that lot next year!

I never did campus visits, but if I had I would have mades an appointment with the dean (or dean of admissions). I would have asked some basic questions, and brought my CV and transcripts to ask where I should work on my application.

well thats a different story then. make sure you dress up; now you might look silly amongst your peers who will most likely be wearing something casual-formal, you my friend, is a major a$$-kisser and by wearing a shirt+tie, you'll make yourself stand out as being more professional. sure, you might come off as being trying too hard and goofy, but it all depends on how you present yourself, your demeanor, your tone, etc.

be the one with the most questions. make sure the questions are intelligent questions, not one of those ******ed questions that everybody knows.

also, if you can, while you're asking questions and being the one having a little conversation with the admission officer, show off some of your humor. dont be a stand-up comedian, but just enough to get a smile from the admission officer who will most likely introduce you to the school, give advice, etc etc.

you might also want to bring an apple, just in case everything fails and the only thing left to do is leave an apple with your name on it on the admission officer's desk.

I am female, so a shirt and tie might be a bit TOO "look at me". 😉 I was thinking a nice shirt and skirt... although a mini might get their attention. hehe

1. Whats the average overall and Science GPA for matriculating class.
2. What are the board scores like for this school on part 1.
3. How active are the alumni in the school. tells you if the school is kind to the students.
4. Does this school have a Problem based curriculum.
5. Are the programs to do research.
6. Is there a DDS/Ph D program
7. Are there other combined programs like DDS/MBA or MS/DDS
8. Is the school competency based or requirement based.
9. Whats the cost of attending your school?
10. Whats the failure rate at your school.
11. Are there any programs that require the student to work in the community
12. Do we have to buy our own equipment
13. Are we responsible for our own lab work.
14. Do we pay if the patient doesn't pay.
15. Where do most students end up after graduation?
16. Does this school offer an AEGD or GPR program after graduation.
17. What the stats on endo,perio,pedo,ortho on the school?

18. Where do most students live
19. Whats the schedule like for students.
20. Are there tutoring services for students.
21. How happy are you with your education here at the school

Some of the answers to those questions can be found on school websites. Ask questions where answers can only be found at the schools. Don't waste your visits by asking questions that can be answered elsewhere. 🙂
