Hi guys, ive been reading these threads for a couple weeks now. I found the sticky on a DAT study guide using chads videos DAT Destroyer Cliffs AP bio and was excited because i actually had all those materials already! So i started it up, but I only have 2 weeks left in break till school starts.

Because of this I decided to condense the "Learning 4 weeks into 2" Ive been studying for around 10 hours a day and will continue to do so till school. The next 4 weeks will be throughout school so I wont be able to give a ton of time to it.

Pretty much my Questions are as follows

1) Is 6 weeks an adequate amount of time to study for the DAT ( Assuming the 10 hours a day for the first 2 week, I also just completed all the sciences I need in college)

2) any tips or strategies on DAT studying while during school?

3) also kind of off topic but im thinking about adding Micro Bio to my classes next semester. Is that on the same topics of the "Bio" of the DAT? and would it hurt me or help me?
I feel like after studing 140 hours of biology I should have a pretty easy time in the class hahah

Thanks again for your help, now that I'm in the thick of it I figured I would start posting and replying instead of just reading!!

It all depends on you and how solid your science background is. If i were you i would extend if you are just starting to study and are currently taking classes. You gain nothing by rushing a DAT in January, but are risking a mediocre score.

I didn't see any microbiology on the DAT.

I would buy topscore, and save the 3 tests for a week or so before you plan on taking it.
If you are not happy with your scores I would extend personally.
Ps I'd also buy crack dat pat and a dat destroyer. Check out the DAT forum. Good luck!

As the post above stated, how much you study honestly depends on your knowledge right now. I was in biology specialist program so the bio section was a joke to me. I just glanced through kaplan bio section in a day or two and was able to score well. But on other sections I had to spend a lot more time (I could not remember anything from Chem lol).

I think 6 weeks is enough if you have fairly good science background. DAT honestly is not that hard. The kind of questions they ask you are fairly general in my opinion. So the stuff you will learn in microbio will probably not come up.

1) There really isn't a good answer for this one. Everyone studies differently and though you can study 24 hours per day...our brains have a hard time hanging on to that much information. Make sure to force yourself to break once every two hours for 15 minutes or so. I've learned from experience that the amount of time you're planning to study burns you out VERY fast. Eat healthy and make sure you get plenty of sleep if you plan to still study as you've indicated. What's the rush for? If I were you, I'd study immediately after the spring semester (beginning in May) and study through the end of July. If you submit your app (via AADSAS) you will still have plenty of time. People on here will tell you otherwise, and while it IS important to get your apps finished ASAP...you have a little time. Plan to spend a day filling out AADSAS, personal statement, etc...the first day the AADSAS is available (usually like June 1st). The method I've laid out for you will allow for about 10 good weeks of studying...without burning yourself out. Also, the timing of the DAT really depends on the schools you're really wanting to get into. For example, your plan may be best for a school like Midwestern because they send out interviews and fill their class very fast. Other schools tend to not rush the process (most other schools) as much. I could go on and on here, but I'm sure you get my point.

2) I wouldn't try it...the DAT is a SERIOUS test and it requires 100% dedication! It's not a good idea to neglect your studies (GPA) while trying to study for this test. What you can do is go ahead and get the "Crack the DAT PAT" perceptual practice and be practicing on it during the weekends, or when you have off time. It takes time to develop the perceptual skills the DAT demands for most...and this will let you slowly (most efficiently) do just that. This is the only area of the test I would advise you to "study" for while attending school. Give your studies the time they deserve and keep that GPA high. When you get ready, order TopScore and take one (of the three) full length tests to see where you weaknesses are (in the sciences). I was a Bio major so I just needed a review of the Bio...and it had been a while for me with Gen Chem, so I modified my studying accordingly. Save one full length test for a couple days before your actual test to see where you are.

Souces I used for studying:

Bio - Cliff's AP Bio (read 3x) / Campbell's Biology text (Ch. 19 & 21) / DAT Destroyer (made notecards for each question and all possible answers)

GC - Chad's videos (watched each 2x) / DAT Destroyer 3x

OC - Chad's videos (watched 2x) / take roadmaps in the DAT Destroyer...white them out and make lots of copies. Try to fill the maps out without the key (make a copy before whiting it out) about 10x. Also, work each OC problem in the DAT Destroyer about 3x, mark each of the ones you missed and study those extra

PAT - Get the 10 test version from Crack the DAT PAT...and study all along, as I've told you above. This is a very important part of the test because it allows schools to assess your visual skills, which are of paramount importance to being a successful dentist. Just study this all along and you will do well.

RC - this is the most important section of the DAT, and one that is overlooked by so many people. The reason being that it's hard to study for. What you can do (if you have the funds) is get Crack the DAT Reading...I've heard lots of people brag on it. I struggled with this section because my mind was beginning to wear out by the time I got to this. I got a 17 in RC and I've been accepted to to schools and have an interview at ASDOH Jan. 27th. Try to score a little higher than I did LOL. I would say a 19+ will do you lots of favors.

QR - this section is just awful on the real DAT. Get the Math Destroyer and work through the tests (11 total). There are two favors you can do for yourself on this section. A) practice without using a calculator, and B) practice doing the tests in the MATH Destroyer in 45 minutes or less. You really need practice with timing on this section, it will definitely be your #1 enemy!

3) Most definitely I WOULD take Micro! I had a drill-sergeant for a professor in Micro, and I thank the good Lord above everyday for it! It will be a class you'll see in dental school. I can't really say that the DAT has Micro on it, but a lot of the things you cover in Micro will be on there (sounds stupid so let me clarify myself)...for example lac operons, and the biochemical aspects of bacteria, etc...Technically those are genetics and biochem, but there is some overlap between subjects. So basically, Micro didn't help me tremendously on my DAT, but I saw things that we learned in Micro on the actual test...I took it only a semester before my test and thankfully I still remembered some of the info!

Pheewww...sound like fun? Just remember to break your days up and to eat well. I ended up having to retake my DAT because I didn't do so hot the first time around...this would be the only drawback to you taking the test in late July as I've persuaded you to do. You will need to do well the first time around.

Let us know which schools you're wanting to attend so we can tailor your studying to meet those schools more accurately.

I dont wanna sound like a jerk and i know you have only the good intentions to help others but i dont think you should be giving advices on how to study for the dat by looking at your scores. You're actually not helping him.

studying for the dat doesnt seem too bad durning the term if it's a light load? I'm going to try it and set aside 3hrs per night to cover material and do questions then devote more time once schools ends for a month.

Has anyone else tried this?

Having good intentions is essential to all dental professionals, if this world had more people like chemboy, it would be a better place. Looking at his scores, i would also think that he is probably not the best person to give advice on prepping DAT. However, his background maybe similar to that of the OP, and maybe the OP can take some useful study tips that better fit him in his studying.

i think 4-5 weeks is more than enough for the DAT, use Cliffs AP BIO, Destroyer, Kaplan and Crack DAT PAT 🙂

I studied for 4 weeks and did fine. Check my old posts to find my breakthrough. Pretty much everything should be covered on there. Check the DAT forums for other breakdowns. You will probably get more help from there. Good luck!

Ok? so you think the OP asked the question to find someone who has his similar background and get the score similar to Chemboys? or Looking for advice from people who got 23AA+ and following their strategies and studies? Screw the good intentions, the OP needs advice that will help him rape the DAT.
You're right. Having good intentions is essential but you need to be at least academically prepared to help others. You can't be a surgeon wanting to save a life of someone who is bleeding to death and cut him open and not know what the hell to do although he clearly has the good intentions and wants to save his life.

hey thanks alot for all your replies guys, i'm actually attending the University of Oklahoma and am in the Spring of my junior year. I just really want to make sure i get at least a 20 on everything so im studying quite a bit. Yes 10 hours a day is bruuuuttall!! haha but at least Chad's videos give me a nice break! Ill be applying for OU and other surrounding schools at the end of the semester. The reason why I can wait till June to take it as stated above is I have to have a recommendation letter from our universities pre dental examination board or something like that nearing the end of the semester and they require a DAT score. If I took it mid to Late February how long till I can take it again?

using DAT destroyer, Cliffs, Kaplan BB, and Chads videos right now plan on getting Crack DAT PAT and possibly Math Destroyer soon.

Thanks again for all the replies guys!

I studied for 6 weeks, and 2 of those weeks weren't very serious, and I did alright so I think you'll be fine.

You should take Micro. I might be a bit biased because it's my area of research but it overlaps with Genetics quite a bit (at least at my school it did) and that might help solidify those concepts...especially some of the lab stuff like plasmids/heterologous expression/etc.

Make sure you take the test right away. I had to wait 3months since canadian DAT is only offered twice a year. I forgot ****loads during those months. So yea... study, dump your information, then you may forget lol...

lol, you do know people get into dental school every year with lower than 23AA's right??? Isn't that the purpose of the DAT? To get into dental school?

Ok, I see now. Yeah you have to wait 90 days to retake...so if you take it in late February, you will be able to retake (if needed) by late May. That will still put you ahead of the game (before the AADSAS becomes available)! By all means, if you're capable to studying during the semester...go for it. I wasn't, and it has nothing to do with me being dumb (supposedly) or my "low" test scores, it's just that I cannot focus on a huge test w/ huge implications with a full-time science load going at the same time.

I cannot find avg. GPAs/DATs for the entering class of 2014 @ OU, maybe you have that info available to you. Obviously, score as high as you possibly can on the DAT. If you score a 20 though, it's not the end of the world.

Using predents.com is helpful sometimes, but you will notice that the whole class doesn't fill out the form on there. Only a hand full of people who get accepted update their profile. The stats are a little skewed for these reasons...so I would use official information from the school itself. Again, best of luck to you!

did i anywhere in my replies indicate that anyone who got below 23aa did not get into dental school? you do know that i was saying the op probably should not get an advice from someone like u who got 17 in both rc and pat and a 16 in qr? i dont understand how ur studying strategies will help the op. R u trying to tell him to follow ur strategies to get ur below average scores or do the exact opposite of how u studied to score well????

Well, one thing I'm quite sure of...the grammar skills you display here will help him a lot more than I can.

Wow great reply if the op was asking for grammar help. He was asking for dat help and ur no help with ur ****ty dat scores.

"grammatical skills" .. Just sayin' 😉

Well i know for sure i'm avoiding threads asking for grammatical skills and chemboy should definately avoid threads asking for grammatical skills and dat studying.

oh come on guys.... 20 TS and 19AA isn't bad...

Yes he could have done better in RC and PAT but he killed his Chems. Plus he was only trying to help.

ho

Don't even start with my english when i got way higher score than your ****ty 17 in RC lol. I probably got higher marks in verbal, english classes and gpa in college. Don't play smart when obviously ur not one of them. You probably only got into loma based on ur religion mostly. A 17 in both RC and PAT is usually a red flag to every dental school because these dictate ur success in dental school lol

Good thing u admit it. try realizing what i am saying in that u should avoid ur comments when someone is asking for dat help. They r asking for help to get high score, not get ur scores. UR not contributing whatsoever

I pretty much did the exact same thing as chemboy and got a much higher score so I think it is pretty solid advice.

Too bad we cannot all be as awesome of a guy as you are! You know what's funny? The most ignorant people in the world are the ones that think they know everything. I've been accepted to two dental schools with my scores, and have another interview that I will probably not attend. Again, the importance of the DAT is to get into dental school, nothing more, nothing less. If I've been accepted into school with my scores, I feel that I have a valid reason to talk about my experience with others on here. If you do not like my advice, don't read it...it's that simple.

Hi guys, ive been reading these threads for a couple weeks now. I found the sticky on a DAT study guide using chads videos DAT Destroyer Cliffs AP bio and was excited because i actually had all those materials already! So i started it up, but I only have 2 weeks left in break till school starts.

for #1) In my humble opinion, that should be good enough.

for #2) umm, I think a light class load is your best option. 2 sciences classes plus 1 non-science. Don't think about loading up more, DAT is serious test.

for #3) Micro biology can be a VERY TOUGH course if your have "one of those professors". At MSU, we had this guy (bertrand), this guy, seriously gave the HARDEST exams anyone can think of. Average of the class was always high 40s / low 50s. And I am talking 250-300 student class whom more than 70% of them were pre-health students so.... However, If you keep your class-load low, you should be able to take micro bio and do really well.

The topics taught in the microbiology class are very different from the biology section of the DAT. In the class, you will mostly be studying bacteria, bacteria structures, bacteria biochemistry, different types of bacteria, and some pathology. Most of these topics aren't covered by DAT.

I dont wanna sound like a jerk and i know you have only the good intentions to help others but i dont think you should be giving advices on how to study for the dat by looking at your scores. You're actually not helping him.

This is uncalled for. Besides, chemboy's scores are not bad at all. TS20 and 19AA are good numbers.... I say hes got all the right to be giving people DAT advice

well, with language like that, you'd be first in running for a top spot in a debate contest

And about all you're doing is making a fool of yourself. Does anyone else feel like they cannot post ANYTHING on here lately without someone attacking you? I mean really, arrogance is a characteristic that any dental professional should not have. It's pathetic that all some on here have to do all day is go around trying to make others look stupid.

thanks dentalWorks! I mean I know I didn't score in the 99th percentile or anything...but I shouldn't be banned from talking on here.

Lol... guess what jerk he will be your colleague weather you like it or not. I hope you dont use those same eyes to look down on your classmates... You got no right to judge others on how they got in. Obviously other schools(ADCOMS who have trained eyes to pick out successful candidates) are interested in him. It does not matter how he got into schools BUT HE GOT IN and thats all it matters. Let him type his heart out on how he studied either op will follow it if they believe its a good advice or they will just ignore it. No need to come here and bash his scores or trying to find a reason why he got into dental school.
Stop looking down on others you will get those eyes poked out.
:poke:

This forum is full of douche bags, whomever reads this post can see what I mean!!!! I cannot believe what people are saying here. A 19AA not good enough to give advice, actually its plenty good. He/she could have bombed the QR sections which no schools give a rats a** about and done well on all the rest that really matter. Some people on here I can't believe. It is to bad that students think that those who only scored above a 23AA can give advice.

Thanks alot! you guys are awesome ( no matter what score you've gotten its all appreciated. And thanks alot Dental Works. I wondered where I had heard your name before and I found out when i clicked your 8 week link. Im following that program right now haha!! I just condensed down the first 4 weeks into 2, doing 2 of the Days using CHADS in 1 day. Takes about 10 hours but im not dead yet!😴

Must be above 14 or 15 then d-school, dont give a rats bottom. You must get at-least 14 or above.

dentalWorks has very sound advice and I've heard lots of people on here have high scores when they follow his outline. We all need to thank him for taking the time to make his outline to share with others.

Can't we just all realize we are in it together. Negativity doesn't bring about anything constructive, just a waste of time.

👍 I guess that's why our perspective profession gets a bad rap...
