Help with traveling to Columbia and NYU from NJ

I would like to take mass transit to both of these interviews (they are on separate days).

I realize they are in 2 very different areas of NYC.

I live relatively close to the Metropark Station, so can easily get to Jersey City, Hoboken, etc. and take trains from there.

Any advice?
