  1. Resident [Any Field]
Need help guys...I resigned from my residency program without completing the last 3 months. It was a really bad fit in many aspecs. Anyway, I am going for interviews for PGy-2 position. Any suggestions in how I can better say things besides it was a bad fit. I have some personal reasons that I can list among the reasons but the most important question to answer is "Why did you leave the program with 3 months to go?" Without going into the details about what happened, I was miserable and decided with the program that it was a suitable time to leave. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

As with all posts on SDN, I'm sure there is more to the story. It would be in your best interest to be as politically correct as you can when answering questions regarding your discontent with your old program. Remember, all Program Directors talk and you could guarantee that any program that will consider you will indeed call your old Program Director to find out what kind of person/resident you are. Rest assured, the true story will come to light (remember, most residencies keep a written record of all that has transpired during your training whereas you only have your word). As a result, I would be as truthful and respectful as possible while on your interviews. Good luck.

My suggestion is to list all the attributes you can bring to the program. i.e work ethic research background, surgical experience etc.. then to admit that there were personality conflicts that interfered with your progress--now how do you plan to resolve these? Are you taking a course going to counseling ( I would do this) and how can you assure them that this will not happen again? How are you sure OB/Gyn is for you? Owning the problem and not making jugements is key.

I would start out by saying something like this: I really appreciate you taking the time to invite me I am really impressed with A,B,C of your program. I know I can be a positive contribution because of X,Y,Z some of my shortcomings that I've been working on is 1,2,3. Then you don't have to wait for the questions. You take control of the situation and direct the interview. Also I would suggest reading up on some articles published by docs in the program you are interviewing at go to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed
and place in the name of the person

Good luck

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I love Ob/Gyn. No problem with the specialty. Just like you said, personal conflicts and stepped on some wrong but big toes. Probably some nurse manager. I don't suck up to anyone which was a major mistakes. Too late to salvage. And I hated where I am, geographically. So just want to relocate and get a fresh start.
