Hi everyone,

I’m a 2nd-year heme-onc fellow and will likely need to start looking for jobs in New York City due to family/spousal reasons. I am not doing me fellowship training in NY. I was wondering if anyone could share insight into the job landscape there. With so many universities in the area, what does the private practice scene look like? From my limited research, it seems like NY Cancer & Blood Specialists is one of the few groups that comes up. Also, with all that universities around to patients even go to smaller community private practices?

I’m not particularly interested in a research-focused academic role. Ideally, I’d like to focus on one (or a couple) of tumor types, and I’m open to covering benign heme if needed. If anyone here works in NYC, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience and thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

I am in an academic position in NYC but interviewed several years ago for non academic roles including NY blood and cancer. They pay well but you will be busy. Overall PP and hybrid roles pay quite well in the suburbs of nyc (ie lower westchester Long Island central and northern nj southwest Connecticut) all within 30-60 mins of nyc. NYC itself also has pp/hybrid jobs just maybe a bit more difficult to find though they exist and also pay well

what are the PP offers in NYC vs suburbs looking like?

Thank you for the reply @whoknows2012

In your experience how is the competition for jobs in this area and scope for negotiation?
Is the heme onc job market in nyc saturated? There are many fellowships in the area do they usually search for jobs elsewhere or stay?

If you’re looking for subspecialized jobs with an academic flavor but pay decently, I’ve heard good things Hackensack (relative to other NYC places).

From my understanding their oncology group is a private group that associates with the hospital but don’t know details. The pay I’ve heard is good for NYC/NJ.

I think it’s pretty wide open currently. None of our fellows struggled with job opportunities in academic or non academic settings

Of course there are probably overly 75 graduating fellows from nyc adjacent fellowship programs but not everyone stays in nyc , some of those are folks with Visas who have restrictions etc. don’t think it’ll be an issue but can report back as my fellows continue to interview
