Hello all,
Anyone have any feedback about this program?
Nothing on scutwork. Website is pretty sparce.

Thanks a lot,
M

Ditto, I've heard good things, but only thru the grapevine. I have yet to meet a resident, grad, rotator etc... that has anything to say about it.

I rotated at henry ford for a month during my fourth year. I applied to all the Michigan programs because I wanted to stay in michigan but after my rotation I cancelled my interview. I didnt think I would be happy there. It is average at best. Morning didactic were dry and really boring. The chair is comes across kind of abrasive. Call schedule sucked bad, like Q3-Q6 it was not even so hard to say what the total call numbers were. If you are a strong candidate I would probably aviod it but if you want to be in the detriot area I would say check it out for yourself. I give it a 5/10. I did not rank anything I interviewed at under a 7/10.

Good luck

Does anyone else have input? Based on the above, I may not bother to interview there although I did want to be in Michigan too. Those Saturday interview spots are filling up, should I give Henry Ford a chance?

I worked with an attending who had just graduated the program during my internship. He was VERY strong clinically, he did it all: hearts, major vascular, high risk peds and ob, transplants, etc with no fellowship. He said they worked hard during residency, didn't elaborate much, but just said they worked hard. I remember interviewing there, but not well. Being from MI I know that the hospital is quite well off financially, does a lot of research (not sure how much anes. though) and if you've ever heard the phrase "early goal directed therapy" you've heard of Ford. I seem to recall that they paid very very well for residency. They do peds at Detroit Children's which is part of the WSU/DMC complex down the road.

If you're not from Michigan and/or familiar with the Detroit area you will likely be disappointed with the surroundings, however.

Nice! I especially liked the black metal fence surrounding the entire place. Ho's and pimp's on the streetcorners too. I Interviewed there last yr becuase I wanted to stay midwest. You gotta like where you're going to work, and I sure as hell wouldn't have liked that area.

Not very nice....Look, the city is a GREAT place to train. And for those of us from Michigan and have family ties here, there are only three programs. HFH is good: They work hard, close to 80 hours/week. They're strong in transplants, but weak in OB and weak in regional anesthesia. You come out very capable. The second place is U. Michigan: good reputation, good program, about their only weakness is that's it's very in-bred. But it's one of the best in the Midwest. ME, I am a resident at Wayne State/Detroit Medical Center: we don't work as hard as HFH, closer to 60 hours/week, we have excellent training in OB, Peds, regional, neuro. We have no transplants, but who needs them...My co-residents here go 50% private practice, 50% fellowships, and at great places (Hopkins, ClevClinic, Brigham, TexHeart,...)

I interterviewd there last year...
If you have family in Detroit and wanna stay in the area, then it might be a good option for you...otherwise you would probably be happier somewhere else...
It was my first time in Detroit, and I didn't really enjoy the city (although I heard some of the suburbs are very nice) or even the hospital...I mean it's pretty clean and all but I didn't get great vibes from that place...however take it with a grain of salt since what I just said is pretty subjective...
Otherwise, you'll get a great training, no doubt about it, you'll get exposed to a lot and if you wanna get plenty of trauma exposure, then this is the place for you...
Be ready to work hard, and if you go over your hours, I heard you get paid $80 an hour for overtime...However, if you do that, then, I don't know when you'll find the time to read or do other things since you work long hours to begin with...
The PD who is also the chairman if I remember correctly is a very nice gentleman who will make sure you pass your boards...I think he told us he writes questions for the boards or administers it or maybe both, I can't remember...and he apparently will prepare u well for the boards...he told us there was 100% passing rate the previous year which was not exactly confirmed by the residents so I'm not sure what to think on this issue ????

Now, some of the residents were complaining of working too much but others really liked the experience...

I ended up ranking it low on my list mainly based on location and also because it's not a university based hospital...
