Hey, I have a few questions about getting into optometry school. I fear that my previous school work may affect my chances of getting accept. I went to a community college, and orginally majored in business, so GPA wasnt on my mind. I had approximately a 2.5 GPA in the community college, and had to retake two classes (calc 3 and chem 2) because i was going through a hard time due to my grandparents death. I have heard that my GPA doesnt transfer to the University that i am going to now. I am doing pretty well now, but i am nervous that my community college work will hinder my chances. I dont think the OAT will be a hurt me, I believe i will do good on it. I want to go to Houston for optometry school, but i havent heard much about it. Does anyone know how easy/hard it is to get accepted. What else should i do to better my chances ( Im currently working at a local optometrist office). Any advice? Do you think i have a shot? thanks guys

hey i went to a community college and then a university when i talked to the optometry advicer she said that they will look at both gpas and then get a overall gpa so i would just keep doing good so they can see how much you improved. I have not heard much about that school in houston, maybe you should go visit and see what they school is really like. good luck!🙂

Most schools calculate a science/pre-req gpa so yours should look good.

Also I've been told by my advisor, although I don't know how true it is, that they will take into consideration how well you improve on your upper division bio courses.

At least at UH, the do look for upward swing in grades. I have seen/listened to their admissions ppt presentation like 4 or 5 times and each time, it is stressed that if beginning grades are not that good, but you have significantly improved that will be taken into account. Try to be sure to do well in pre-reqs though. good luck!
