high myopia

I wouldn't worry too much. I'm -11.00 in one eye and -10.50 in the other. I asked my optometrist what would happen if it kept going up and he said to not worry about it that even if it goes up to -30.00 you won't go blind.
Maybe some OD's that write here will have some input too. I'd be curious to hear what they say.

Wow, but I'm getting up there too and I'm pretty scared. I wish there was a way I could slow it down but I guess it's just natural? Do you have to wear RGPs at that level? or....how do you tackle such a high rx?
I believe that you are at increased risk for vitreous/retinal detachments once you start getting up there. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi,
My friend has a pretty high prescription, around -7.25. Would he still be elgible for Lasik and would there be a greater risk? I've also heard that once your lenses become too thin, they can't perform Lasik because they don't have enough to work with. Is that true?

Hey,
I don't think they become thinner when you have myopia, but the eyeball becomes elongated. I was just wondering whether a person with high myopia could have problems getting lasik.

In LASIK, nothing is done to the lenses of your eyes. The cornea is what is operated on. The thickness of your cornea is one of the major factors that will determine a higher myope's eligibility for LASIK - the higher the refractive error, the thicker a cornea will need to be for LASIK surgery. However, with LASIK, the pressure in the eye is greatly increased while the flap is being made, and there have been some reports of complications associated with that. My understanding is that because most high myopes have longer eyeballs, this creates more traction on the retina, and when the pressure is increased greatly, this can precipitate detachment of the retina.
Another option for higher myopes is an ICL, which is a lens that is implanted in the eye, in front of the natural lens (but behind the iris). Having been in the OR for this procedure a few times, it is a pretty cool option (and it's reversible...). If you are a high myope for whom LASIK is not an option (and you really want corrective surgery), this might be a viable option...
