! Hey this is serious, I don't want to apply to one of these sham schools and wind up practicing witch-craft in some circus!

They are real doctors. They can do residencies in anything that an MD can.

BTW, prepared to be flamed for this thread, even if you meant no harm.

Are you sure UCLA?

hakksar says you have to feed trolls w/ a DO!

D.O.s are real doctors. However the curriculum of a D.O. is different from the curriculum of an MD. One main difference (there may be others...i dont know) between the two types of physicians is that D.O.s have been specially trained to perform osteopthic manipulations on patients. They view the patient as a 'total person" and focus on preventative care. They view the whole body rather than treat specific symptoms or illness. D.O.s use Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) in their practice. This involves the use of their hands to diagnose injury and illness and to encourage your body's natural ability to heal. If i am not mistaken the majority of D.O.s go into family practice but some do get into residencies like surgery, radiology, etc, and train just like an MD. The only thing i am not sure of is whether or not a D.O. is as respected as an M.D. (I am not saying that D.O.s are not to be respected...they bust there ass for four years too!!) Someone that has actually worked in this environment will be able to tell you that.

America has 47,000 D.O.s, which account for only 5 percent of the country?s physicians and they handle approximately 10 percent of all primary care visits. D.O.s also have a strong history of serving rural and underserved areas. I learned all this stuff when i went for an interview at TCOM in Fort Worth, Texas.

I hate it when MD's dont treat me as a total person...

This is pretty much correct. DOs are real physcians and I think the maker of this thread is a troll. Those cooky trolls, they just never stop. : 😱

Ok wts a troll? and:

Bono: thanx for the clarity!!

Hey the info out there is not so accurate

Odarolic: wt do you mean?

I suggest getting on the internet and doing some simple searches. DOs ARE real doctors. Go the the AACOMAS or AACOM website for more resources.

Is it juicy? Is it crunchable? my pressious?

A troll is someone who posts obnoxious questions just to encourage arguments or flaming. Posting some like DOs are not real doctors would piss alot of DOs off and cause flaming. That is why people think you're a troll.

As for what Odarolic meant, DOs say they treat the whole person and not just the symptons. In other words insinuating that MDs don't treat the whole person. Odarolic was attempting to be funny by playing off this idea.

Luck: thanx, I didn't mean it that way... I was talking w/ my research prof and he was talking out of his arse I guess.

well, I'm not convinced you are a troll (someone trying to be obnoxious) bc I didnt know what a DO was when I started this process...but 1st of all, yes, as has been said, they are real doctors with all the rights of an MD, and 2nd I meant that the distinguishing factor of them treating the whole patient doesnt cut it for me. I think all good (effective) doctors try to treat the whole patient and I dont think you need to be a DO to think that way. I dont think Bono was making that point but I have heard it put that way before.

yeah....DO's are real docs. My cousin went to a DO school in iowa. He's a family practitioner now. You still call em dr. so-and-so, but they just won't have the "MD" at the end of their name. instead it's "DO". Only thing is that for those people who really don't know the diff between a DO and MD, they'll think a DO is not a true doc or soemthing.

If you're still curious you can go to this link that has info on it.
http://archfami.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/8/6/477

This link has the 20 osteopathic colleges.

Oh and for your information, DO stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.
The neat thing is it's easier to get into a DO school vs an MD school. The average gpa is a 3.3 and MCAT is a 25.4 or something like that. DOs are found in all specialties. In fact some of the doctors you see at a hospital may be a DO and you wouldn't even know it unless you looked at their nametag. It's the best kept secret for 100 years. 😀

Thanx, thats nice that its easier to get into. I wonder why that is?
It seems that both DO and MD have the same accreditation.

now you are running the risk of getting flamed :scared:

Ok you and your flaming trolls need to calm down. I just heard about this DO thing today.

Well the LCME accredits MD schools and the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) accredits DO schools. The reason is simple. Not too many premeds knew about it such as yourself, and once they do, they think it's a fake doctor such as your research professor probably thought, or want the MD behind their name. But, if you just want to practice medicine and don't care about having MD after your name, then DO is a good call.

You can find out more about DOs by shadowing one but to be honest, the DO will act just like an MD. There really isn't a difference and most DOs don't even do manipulation even though they could.

This is great...something new to research!!

Ok so i've been researching and Michigan state has two med schools??
A DO and an MD?
Wt gives? I wonder if they have a battle of the classes each year?

DOs are like SO MUCH BETTER than MDs because they treat the patient as a whole.

Like this one time like I went to the hospital with some stomach pain and like the doctor REMOVED MY STOMACH because he like couldn't treat the whole person or something so like he REMOVED MY STOMACH just so he could like do an x-ray on it because like MDs dont treat the patient as a whole. It like turned out to be like bad refried beans, but like he was an MD so he like couldnt treat me as a whole person so he like REMOVED MY STOMACH and sent it to radiology. Like, I should have like seen a DO or OD or dyslexic doctor or something.

Maybe MSU puts up a wall, like the Berlin wall, between the two schools?
I have got to apply there and see this!

I don't see how anyone is not bright enough to just go into the pre-DO forum and just read about it, instead of starting a flame war, even though you probably didn't mean to. Anyway, there is a great DO school very close to where you live so why don't you check them out for yourself. Talk to the Davie/Ft.Lauderdale community about those "not-so-real doctors" and you will be surprised and say wow, they have really tricked people into thinking they can practice medicine 🙂

but on a real note, you should check them out because I think it's pretty close to Boca Raton

msu DO school is really great. you should go to their home page and read the information.

As I understand it, both schools take the same classes together. I believe though that the allopathic school is moving soon. Also, last year the DO school was ranked 4th in primary care and the allopathic school wasn't in the top 50 of primary care.
