I'm OOS for both and torn! I'm currently accepted at SLU and heard from Hofstra a few days ago- they're giving me a few weeks to decide.

Hofstra

pros:
  • strong NorthShore health system
  • smaller overall class size
  • unique curriculum
cons:
  • more expensive cost of living
  • I'm not sure if I'll like PBL. I feel like this could be awesome or a big time-waster.

SLU

pros:
  • p/f unranked pre-clinical
  • cheaper cost of living
  • non-mandatory lectures & flexibility to do well based on how I learn best
cons:
  • probation? I loved the school and have a mentor that graduated from here. Probation is my only real worry.

Now that I wrote this, I realize that I want to chose SLU, but I'm scared of the probation! I also need to double-check if Hofstra has p/f unranked for pre-clinical.

Help 🙂

SLU is a great school. The probation doesn't affect anything. Some great schools have ended up on probation. It's almost always for relatively minor issues that get resolved quickly and the whole thing blows over.

Medical school is hard and it sounds like you'd be happiest at SLU. There's no significant difference in prestige or cost, so deciding based on personal preferences makes sense. Enjoy St.Louis!

SLU is the oldest med school west of the Mississippi. They've successfully trained thousands and thousands of docs. Probation is hardly going to do them in.

Pretty sure Hofstra is P/F unranked. Personally if I were in your position I'd choose Hofstra just because Hofstra admits a more "competitive" class, so I feel like it's gotta go up in rankings/reputation at some point. That being said, I thought that the dean, the people who interviewed me, and the students at Hofstra all seemed really weird. Also, Long Island sucks. Then again, it's close to NYC which is cool.

Actually, IDK what I'd do. That's a tough spot. St. Louis seems like a cooler city to be in though. Also, the flexibility of SLU seems pretty nice. Plus you would have an actual alumni network of physicians who graduated from SLU.

But yeah, I wouldn't worry about the probation thing. Baylor, GW, and RFU have all gone through that unscathed.

Thank you for the input! May I ask what school you're at currently?

I agree with your points 100%. Hofstra has higher numbers for sure, though I was underwhelmed by my interview day. One of my interviewers (bad cop routine?) seemed to almost belittle me to make me rattled. Then my second interviewer talked 95% of the time and praised me. And yeah, LI was pretty meh. What did you think of the PBL curriculum of Hofstra?

Also, I'm strongly considering HPSP and I saw your helpful post on the other thread. Thanks for the input- I thought you had some great points regardless of how that thread started to derail. May I ask what school you will be at in the fall?

Hi! First off, congratulations on your acceptances!! I'm a current first-year at HNSOM and just wanted to chime in to confirm that the first two years are unranked, P/F. To talk about my experience with our case-base learning curriculum... It was a steep learning curve for me at first, but I've definitely found that I've surprisingly retained more of the information and can apply it in clinical settings (we have a ton of clinical time in the first two years with our ICE program). If you have any specific questions about the curriculum or about living on Long Island, please feel free to PM me and we can chat more!

Thanks so much for your response! Are you from the NY/LI area originally?

Also, after getting used to PEARLS/PBL, do you enjoy it?

Hi! I'm actually from California, spent four years in the Midwest for undergrad, and then moved out here for medical school. It was an adjustment for sure being in the heart of Nassau County (AKA suburbia), but I've grown to enjoy the little quirks of Long Island (like living just 13 minutes away from Jones Beach)!

I can genuinely say that I love PEARLS after having been through three courses now. It keeps the material relevant and fun to learn. The idea isn't necessarily to "teach each other," which is what my initial impression was, but rather to hold your classmates accountable for having mastered the "first-order" knowledge going into a PEARLS session and push each other with additional higher order questions to fortify your understanding of the concepts covered in the case. It sounds sort of nebulous in writing, but I would be happy to explain this concept further and provide concrete examples of how this is done in our curriculum (didn't want to write an essay through this post)!
