Ok...I'm a 3rd year medical student that really really interested in OB...like 99.9%. But I'm in a dilemma...took boards TWICE and didn't pass. Going to pass this time. My GPA is pretty good and my rotations so far are High Pass with a few Honors Passes...so my question is do I have a chance getting a Residency? What can I do to show programs that I will make a great resident and be a wonderful addition? What programs do you suggest? My top spots are in the Baltimore/DC area...that's where my fiance (then will be husband) lives and we want to start our life off together. Can someone please help me out. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. 🙂

Your best bet to improving your chances are to get good letters of rec and do some away rotations at places you are interested in. Your deans' letter will make a difference too. You might also get asked about your board score at interviews so make sure you have a good and reasonable explanation.
You may also check with state boards in the places you are interested in going to residency and practicing. I think I remember seeing somewhere that some states limit the number of times you can repeat your USMLE.

Definitely do a sub-i and make sure you score well over 200 on your USMLE as your biggest obstacle might be meeting the pre-screen cut off requirements for interviews.

You can easily set up Sub-I at UMD, GWU, here at WHC, and GUH (Don't know about Hopkins, FS, and Sinai much). Also, don't be discouraged with an initial rejection letter. Call the program and find out if they can review your application again.

Good luck!

thanks for the help guys...if anyone can think of anything else PLEASE PLEASE POST. 🙂

If you're a third year i suppose you're talking about step 1. So take step 2 early in your fourth year. That way you will have your scores back early enough to send them in with your eras application.

You may need to take some time off from school to prepare for your boards to ensure that you do well. You can always make that time up if need be. Evaluate your strategy. Meet with whatever department in your school helps with board prep b/c you need to seek out all the assistance that you can. You should definitely take a prep course if you haven't already. There are courses out there that can help if you have failed. One of those courses is based out of Chicago (unsure of name). Focus on getting through step one and just take it one day at a time. Don't worry too much about OBGYN. You can do it. You will be successful with your next attempt at the boards and becoming an OBGYN. Believe in yourself!!!!
