This may seem like a completely random thread, but I'm interested in life during dental school.

I'm wondering if there are any avid horseback riders who have managed to continue riding through dental school?

I've kept one horse in training throughout undergrad, riding 5-7 days per week. I limited my competitive season to the months I wasn't in school (obviously summers free of school are now a thing of the past). I was very good at managing my time during undergrad, but I understand that it's an entirely different ball game in dental school. At this point, I have plans to leave my horse home and see how things go. Riding and the barn are a huge stress release for me, but I'm mentally prepared to try and replace it with time at the gym.

I've met one dental student, who, last I heard, was able to ride through the first 2 years of dental school. Granted, how often she rode depended on the week.

Any other similar stories?

I remember my wife studying for orgo at the barn the night before her final while her horse was colicing. She stopped trying to ride after that and only rode infrequently through vet school.

Whatever you end up doing, make time to decompress. Dental school is mentally taxing and you need to let your mind escape regularly.

I am moving my horse with me to dental schooland plan to ride on weekends. Keeping her at a AQHA trainer near school.

Hey,

I randomly signed on today for the first time in ages.. I have my horse here with me, if youre not gunning for the top youll have time to ride.

Wow, this is great to hear!

I was honestly freaking out at the idea of being horseless for 4 years. I do 3 day eventing, but I don't really plan on competing while in school. Even just managing a few days a week will keep me happy!

Thanks for all the responses. 🙂

Pop over to the pre-vet forum if you want to read about how people managed owning/riding horses while completing a very demanding degree. You can find a pre-vetter loving pretty much any animal, 🙂

p.s. There's a lot less sleep & a lot more multi-tasking & budgeting involved!
