I love to do things with my hands, but I'd rather work in a hospital setting than being stuck in a 1,500 square foot Class B Office space for eight hours.

So an option that I'm looking at is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
I've heard that acceptance into OMS is pretty competitive. You gotta be something like in the top 5% of the class?
Can somebody give me an insight on how I can prepare myself for entrance into OMS residency program?

Also, are there other dental specialties that are hospital based?

A small fraction of hospital dentists exists. You need to worry about being accepted into dental school.

If you want to work with your hands in a hospital, I would strong suggest medical programs that are surgery related. Shadow an OMFS, general dentist, and some medical doctors to what's best for you.

What Reo said. Also, maybe look into a community health clinic, where you wouldn't necessarily be in a hospital, but its a different avenue where you can pursue general dent. And note, OMFS is also prevalent in private practice as well. Again...first dental school, then wherever life takes you from there.

Do you think the operating rooms have more than 1500 square feet?

Working in a hospital isn't nearly as exciting as the OP thinks it is.
Is that true?
after all, it seems like everyone's going for dentistry because of the flexibility and an opportunity to have their own business!

I worked in a hospital for 20 years. It is one of the reasons that I am choosing to work in a 1500 sq ft office. There is something to be said about being your own boss. Hospitals are very political, especially for docs. There seems to be a hierarchy in place with the administration being on the top. Yes, an MBA can trump an MD.

I do both. I have had a private practice for 24 years and am the director at a large hospital in NYC. Best of both worlds. Each one is very interesting, and they are quite different from eachother. The money is in private practice. The fun is in the hospital, and whoever said hospitals are very political is right. Of course if your service is making a fortune for the hospital, you get treated pretty well.

Thanks for all the reply!
Gave me a pretty good idea of what I need to do.
