So what is a typical day like in the life of a pediatric intern/resident? Do you work the max 80 hours a week? Just wanted to get an idea of what is in store for me!

Depends on where you work and what rotation you are on. During ICU months you should expect to leave late and so there you'll easily put in 80 or more hours a week in pediatrics. During floor months you don't usually put in 80 hours you may come close to it during winter months but usually not. The rest of the time electives etc. you'll probably put in 40 hours to maybe 50 or 60 hours depending on what you are doing. Hope this helps some.

8 AM- 9 AM: A lavish breakfast served up personally by the program director with a lot of support for the hard working night-call residents. Big decisions are made: Bagels or donuts every afternoon in the resident lounge?

9AM - noon: A get-together featuring a teddy bear like attending 🙂D) and a bunch of cute, cuddly kids and their thoughtful, polite but slightly nervous parents.

Noon-1 PM: A state of the art lecture on something really cool, like pediatrics on Mars in the 22nd century. Complete with a large lunch and all the diet soda you can drink.

1 pm - 4 PM: A chance to relax, check on a few labs on your patients and admit one patient (MAX). Don't forget the donuts in the lounge.😛

4 PM: Sign-out to the senior residents and fellows who handle the night-shift. No point in having the interns stay late..

Evening: Hang out on SDN...

well, actually pedi residency is the same as any other in-patient residency and when on an in-patient service you'll work about 80 hours a week. When not, a bit less. But it's worth it!
