housing for med school

OK, so I'm going to some 2nd look trips for MD/Phd acceptees... but I'm also waiting to hear back from about 3 schools.

How are you guys handling housing? I'd rather not have to fly back out there again before I move to sign a lease for an apartment. Have any of you found apartments on the internet? Is there any way to avoid paying for another trip prior to actually moving? Money is really tight right now. I was planning on using the 2nd look trips as a time to possibly sign a lease, but now that I know that I wont hear back from some schools yet, I cant really do that because I dont know for sure where i'll be headed.

How are the rest of you guys handling this? If only those schools would make up their mind or something.

Anyway, without getting too philosophical about this... Use your second look weekend for EVERYTHING! Make use of every second because it is a great opportunity to get some work done-- see your FA counselor, check out housing, get all the mundane paperwork in order. You're there anyway, you might as well extend your stay for 2-3 days just to get everything in order to prevent future useless trips and wastes of money. However, even if you do that, you will still probably have to make 1-2 trips back again, just to get everything up to par before actually making the big move. If the city is close enough to drive without you freaking out, I'd go for it and save some money that way. As for the internet, I don't really trust too much on the internet (even SDN :wink: ) esp if you're planning on living in this place for the next 4 years-- I'd want to see it in person and check out EVERYTHING with the owners/landlords, & check ou the area too, rather than trust an internet description which will inevitable be misleading. In a nutshell: milk your 2nd look weekend for everything it's worth-- even weeding out roommates for you.

I saw the topic of this thread, and even though the course of the conversation has diverged from it, I thought I'd try to give a helpful response about housing.
If you don't want to fly across the country to look at apartments, I'd recommend getting on the internet and using "homestore.com". I narrowed down my selections through this and used it to find a nice place in downtown Detroit. After using the site to get some additional information from the apartment company I set up a tour and turned in a lease application.
The info on homestore was pretty darn helpful for me...I'd recommend it for apartment shopping.

First off, call the Student Affairs office -- if they haven't already sent you housing info., they should. Usually it's info. about the dorms (if they have any), and nearby neighborhoods for off-campus housing/names & numbers of realtors, etc. If they give you realtor info., call and try to schedule an appt. during your 2nd look weekends.

Secondly, use the 2nd look weekends as an opportunity to grill the current students about housing options -- safety, convenience, price, etc. You might find some good leads this way.

Third, set up the appt. with the realtor, and use it to get a feel for lots of the possible housing options. This is especially helpful if there are certain neighborhoods full of condos or apartments nearby that the students often use. That way, if you have to wait until May or June to get a place (most places become available 30-60 days before the new lease date) you can hopefully select from a complex or neighborhood you have already seen.
