How bad is Georgetown?

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but what are the "bad" impressions/things that you hear about georgetown? Just curious.

Though Gtown has had its fair share of financial issues...many people on SDN intentionally bash Gtown in the hopes that other people either won't apply or turn down acceptances. Gtown has a huge master's program for people that want to improve their credentials to get into med school. While it is a legit program that is very succesful...many of the students in the program will do anything to get in to GU...even bad mouth it on a message board in the hopes that it will clear up spaces for them. Just beware of what you read on this board about Gtown. Your best bet is to talk to an actual med student there and get their take on it.

I second that...try posting in the allo forum and see what rumors current GU med students can confirm or deny.

Georgetown Sucks!! GWU is WAY better!! 😀

Georgetown is the only school that flat out rejected me after an interview. It was odd, because I thought I had my best interview there, and it was the lowest ranked school I went to interview at. I even wrote the Dean a letter in which I discussed my agreement with the school's philosophy.

Quoted for truth.

The only reason I'm going to SLU (my 2nd choice) for undergrand instead of GWU is because my parents didn't want me away from home for at least my first 2 years. So, I'll hope to be going to GWU for med school (damn... I wish I would've applied for the 7 year bs/md program @ gwu 🙁)

I didn't do the GU post bach program someone mentioned above but I did a similar Master's program in Tumor Biology there and am now an employee there. Through my own experience and from meeting GU medical students, I think it's a really great program. Most students really enjoy the education and the experience there. I can answer more specifics if anyone's interested.

Financially, the hospital is in a bit of trouble. A few years ago it was headed toward bankruptcy and MedStar took over. The hospital is still borrowing millions of dollars from the rest of the university to stay afloat. There is a plan in effect that is supposed to render the hospital financial independence by 2010. That being said, no matter what the financial situation is, money will always be available for the hospital and the med school program whether it comes from the rest of the university or some other source of funding, i.e. financial problems wont' affect your education if you choose to go there.

Wisco, I'm actually an ex-physio masters from GU. Not to jump on you, but I'd be curious to know where you get your information from about us "bashing" GU. Infact, our class is one of the most supportive groups of people I've ever studied with. Everybody here knows how tough it can be to get a medical school acceptance and is almost always happy for people who get in somewhere. Also, most of us were already accepted to schools before GU sent out their acceptances to us. We are judged in an entirely separate category, not impacted by the general acceptance pool.
You may want to double check some of the things you have heard about GU. Most of the people I know who have been accepted to GU have decided to take their acceptances at different schools. I'll let you decide for yourself if you feel that is bashing or maybe due to things that may or may not be true. GU is a great place, however it is not for everybody. You should always take what you here on SDN with a grain of salt, but to assume that a certain group of people are doing something like that out of competativeness is a bit self-centered. Many people are not all that concerned with what others are doing, but I can only speak for those people I know, which would the physio masters students of whom you refered.

Hey,

There was actually a few threads with waitlisted physios bashing GU a few weeks back. They were actually signing up with new names on SDN just to say a few bad things about gtown to make it look like a bunch of people had bad experiences there. You make a good point though: take everything on SDN with a grain of salt. I personally turned down GU for a bunch of reasons, but every applicant should have the chance to base their decision on things other than what they say on SDN.

i was all set on going to gtown until i just got off the waitlist at case. gtown's not at all as bad as people on this site make it out to be... yes, the hospital was in bad shape in 2000 but has improved its situation since. there are several other high profile hospitals in financial trouble too--uchicago, upenn, stanford, nyu, etc. bottom line is that it's expensive to run a hospital, regardless of how prestigious the medical school is. sick people need care, and at georgetown the patients get virtually the same treatment as any other teaching hospital, regardless of who's paying for it. so no, there isn't any real trickle-down effect in terms of quality of the clinical experience. i picked case because of the cleveland clinic and some exceptional clinical opportunities, but i really liked georgetown too, and the area's great. current gtown students are definitely the best people to talk too--they seem to like it a lot there.
