How bad is getting B's?
Started by iceet
Straight B's pretty bad. A Mix of A's and B's is ok.iceet said:How bad is it to get B's, especially in science classes compared to non-science classes?
Bad?! Bs were the best thing that ever happened to my life!iceet said:How bad is it to get B's, especially in science classes compared to non-science classes?
Bs die when they sting you...but some people can't tolerate B stings at all and they die too. So they're definitely bad for the Bs and sometimes they can be bad for people too.
For every B in a science class you get, get an A, a 3.5 in BCPM is a good score to have. B's by itself is bad, B's mixed with A's is good.

B's wont kill you. Don't listen to the people that aren't trying to be helpful. I can't see how all these people want to be doctors but they jump all over and tear apart the first person who asks a question. They are just being inconsiderate and not helpful.
B's are not bad as long as you get A's as well. My advice to you will be to look into medical school's stats and see what their average matriculant science GPA is. This should give you an idea of how people who have been accepted into medical school have faired in their science and math classes. Good luck!

i agree with the above poster. it's really easy to write sarcastic posts when a lot of us have recently graduated to the allopathic/osteopathic forums. let's show a little sensitivity towards the OP, guys. he/she has a legitimate concern, and i know i'm not the only one on here who had less than a 3.5 gpa to work with when applying to med school. 🙄

haha

I agree with the sentiments of the above two posters exactly. To the OP: this is really why the MCAT was developed. It's not a perfect measure of anything, of course, but it helps put your grades into a context.
If you have lots of Bs in the sciences but you rock high Bio and Physical Sciences scores on the MCAT, this tells the ADCOMs that your Bs are worth their weight in caviar (ADCOMs are all filthy elitist bastards who love caviar and baby sealskin, true fact).
Even if you don't have atmospheric MCATs, a few science Bs are par for the course.

I will second the sentiments of everyone else here - Bs are totally okay. Of the 10 quarters of science I took in undergrad (3 chem, 3 orgo, 3 bio, 1 physics - AP credit), I got 3 Bs, 4 B+'s, 1 A- and 2 A's. And there was really no upward or downward trend in my science grades. I did well on the MCAT, and couple of math/stats classes helped boost my BCPM GPA, but regardless I had plenty of interviews and not once did anybody mention my science grades. Just keep working hard and you'll be fine, getting a few B's gives you more character 🙂
What's next? A-'s?

There has been SDN posts complaining about A-'s. Needless to say, SDN was all over that.KingTutATL said:What's next? A-'s?

Its worse than shaking a baby.
USArmyDoc said:You guys make me laugh. You make fun of a person for asking this question, but all of those with the wiseass remarks have an acceptance in hand.
this is true...but in all fairness, it's an acceptance with multiple Bs (and some Cs) in hand...

Dude, don't sweat it... seriously. My anecdotal evidence. 4.0 first year, couple A-'s second, A- and B+, B- third, and half B's senior. A significant downward trend and I got into 3 so cal schools. Think of it this way, you could get a 3.5 if you got one B for every A. On the other hand, that first non A really stings when 4.0 drops like an anvil.
If your startin to sport C's, well thats another story. Well one or two no big deal, but if you just keep your grades in the A and B range, you'll be fine.
Here's my suggestion... go take a girl on a date, get some ass, and the B's will be the last thing on your mind.

hey bluntman you go to UCSD right? Did they offer you the Magna cum laude distinction? I want one!
Yea...UCSD does the standard top 14% thing for university honors:instigata said:hey bluntman you go to UCSD right? Did they offer you the Magna cum laude distinction? I want one!
98-99%ile = summa cum laude
94-97%ile = magna cum laude
86-93%ile = cum laude
Last year the lower cutoff for magna was 3.770 (for Revelle college at least). All you really get for it though is a tiny little sticker on your diploma. 🙄

Nah...summa is always the highest.HemaOncoDoc said:I think missed something. Did you switch magna with summa?
Ah, thanks for the clarification. Don't know why I thought otherwise. Must have been buzzed during graduation 🙂Bluntman said:Nah...summa is always the highest.
lol...me too!...Although honestly I would probably have to describe myself more as "wrecked". Advice of the day:HemaOncoDoc said:Ah, thanks for the clarification. Don't know why I thought otherwise. Must have been buzzed during graduation 🙂
Don't stay up eating special rice krispy treats until 3am when you have to be awake and functional at 6!!! Definitely don't recommend that one. 😳
Getting a B is somewhere between kicking a dog and being under 30 and having erectile dysfunction....so you tell me, how bad is getting a B?
Bs are great! With all those Cs on my transcript, I need something to bring them up.
