How bad is it to miss 2-3 days during a rotation?

Let's say for work and research purposes (in my case, I am presenting at a conference), I have to miss Thurs and Friday of the week.
I ain't talking about the med school administration because we can submit an application for absences.

But is it frowned upon by the preceptors if you voluntarily choose to miss a couple days of clerkship? (ie. they would give you a lower grade)

Any experience?

I think you can probably work this out with the clerkship director. I spoke with a few people about this and they said you might be able to make things better by volunteering to make up the time on weekends and or the weekends before/after the rotation if necessary.

This.

Also just depends on what rotation it is and how it's structured. If it's something like inpatient IM, and you're on a team with other students and residents and assigned your own patients then it may be a little more difficult and will probably come across better if you're willing to take an extra call, or a weekend or something to make up for it. If it's just you and the attending, he may not care and just let you have the time off as is.

Regardless, just go to the clerkship director, your attending, resident, whoever and explain. It's not like you're asking for a couple days off to go goof around, they understand things like conferences and presentations come up.

I've never had a problem when it comes up.

This is pretty much how it works. On longer rotations, it's easier to miss days without having to make up time at the end. If it's a month long rotation, you just have to hope that you don't get sick or something else doesn't come up because you'll be maxed out on allowed absences.

I have personally missed days on rotations. I remember missing a few days at the beginning of my medicine rotation and another student on the service took off time at the end of the same month. There were no problems with the team. It did not impact my grade.
