How common is it to get one of your top 3 in psych?

Of course this leaves out all of the people who don't match and they clearly go all the way through their list. I have to believe psychiatry is even more optimistic. The match goes one way or the other in general. You get one of your top choices, or you don't match for the most part.

Yup, data really supports this. Interviewing at 20 places versus 10 has almost no return for twice the investment and $$. Not saying to you of course as you know that 1000x over, but for applicants knowledge.

Interviewing at 20 vs 10 only has a slight effect on IF you match, but it can have a huge effect on WHERE you match. That alone makes it worth it to me.

Unfortunately for me, I ranked at 7. Thanks to a low CK it took me out of running at several places I probably would have gotten. I ranked up so I expected to fall so to speak. Landed at my second safety spot. I still advise enough interviews to make sure you are cover to match. I knew I needed some weaker programs to cover me for a bad CK. I did not want to state why my CK was low. SO, I had to drop. It might had a made a difference. But excuses are just that.
And trust nobody.....they all lie. You are not a princess and special! lol

I think it really depends. If you are interviewing at a lot of top programs that are all many people's #1 then it can be a little more random. At my #4 and really happy to be here. I'm pretty sure I was crazy and should have ranked it #1 in the first place. But I was super stressed out about my list up until submission and then some.

Worth noting that the 85% number posted above includes all the people applying to small/competitive specialities and people whose applications became significantly weaker after interview invitations already went out (very poor CK scores or CS failures). Especially now that so many of us go on 10+ interviews, the chances are probably even higher for psych applicants who don't have those issues.
