How common is it?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't taken it yet, but a common theme is that most people think that they failed the real thing. NBME is the best predictor. If you're strong there, try to relax for a couple weeks.

To go from strong QBank and NBME scores to failing the real thing? Because I think I just did that...

Not strong like 800-strong 😉 , but I got a 580... I really felt good going into it, and I felt helpless and violated leaving it.

Hi Flobber,

I'm in the same boat as you... got a 570 on NBME II and did decently on Q bank and then ....... the real thing hit and I think I may have failed too.... lets hope for a big curve!!!!!!!!!

I go to a school that averages significantly above the mean and yet I hear that about half the students come out saying they think they failed. I would just try not to worry about it and enjoy being done. 🙂 Plus I'm going to guess there have been other times you thought you failed a test and then ended up with an A. I think that's just part of the definition of a med student 😉 OCD personality disorder, plus comorbid generalized anxiety disorder ....and maybe some hypochondriasism(sp?) thrown in there as well.

I think what makes it difficult is that no one knows how they grade this damn thing. Is getting 70% of the questions right average? better than average?

If we knew how they graded the damn thing, I don't think nearly as many students would think they failed.

But try not to worry about your score. I'm sure you did fine!

Thanks, everyone. I feel a little better now...

And I just want to state that I would be absolutely THRILLED if my score came back equivalent to my NBME score. I would be flailing around and flapping my arms like a fairy if I got a 236. However, I feel so much worse after taking the real thing than I did near the end of NBME 3. I think I just got a really hard form; I can't imagine ANYONE walking away from the form that I took smiling and thinking about how easy it was. It just wasn't.

Ah well, good luck Ocean and to all of the others worrying like me. And good luck to future test-takers. If you get my form, please answer approximately 40-50% correct  .

my NBME scores were not bad but i also feel like i failed the real thing...oh well, we'll see, at least we are not alone!

Just took the real thing today and had ALOT of biochem and Molecular Biology...about 5-7 questions/ block. I would've thought my biochem major would've helped, but we'll see.

The only thing that could have happened is that USMLE has kicked its standard up a few notches, whereas Kaplan is still blissfully unaware of the paradigm shift!!And students are suffering coz of it.Could it?

quite possibly true...Especially the biochemistry aspect of it. I was somewhat prepared for it b/c of all the help SDN had provided, but still there were a handful of biochem/mol bio questions I had never heard of before (you can see I'm bitter...hahaha). I'm a bit nervous about how I did on the real thing. I felt the things that I knew fairly well all of a sudden became difficult to recall. I was getting low 70% all the way up to 80's on Qbank. I don't feel like I did as well on some of those blocks (Actually I felt like I bombed the first block after lunch). Hopefully these feelings are natural and not PTSD

I'll just add my voice to those, who said that 570 is a great score!
I haven't taken the real thing yet, but when finishing some NBME's, I felt I did really bad, and ended up doing really well.
Besides, several of the third years at my school said it was "normal" to feel that you failed going out. Also, apparently they throw in some "experimental' questions that are not graded. And finally, I heard they curve each form based on its difficulty...not sure if that's true, but it'd be nice.
So I really wouldn't worry too much, since the probability of you failing is pretty darn low. I mean has that ever happened to anyone (doing well on NBME and then failing)?

As far as mol. bio. and biochem go, I am really beginning to think that this is completely subjective. I have a relatively good background in those, while I am quite clueless in behav. sci. (they didn't even teach that at my school). Anytime I take a practice test, I feel there are all behav. sci. questions and not enough biochem. So yes...if you go in without much biochem prep, you will feel that you get biochem quesitions all the time - that's because you will spend the most time on them.

Excellent point. I'm sure I'll come out feeling like I got too many genetics questions 🙁
