Regardless of its Ivy League name tag, how hard is it to get into Columbia? Do you have to have more impressive extra cirriculars, research, high gpa...ect?

High DAT.
Columbia doesn't look for high gpas. Their average gpas have consistently been around 3.4-3.6.

From what I've heard, they prefer their own students from their undergrad university and some famous feeder schools. This isn't to say that its impossible to get into Columbia if you go to a state institution, but they clearly have a lot of students from Top 20.

This is aside from the high Dat.

columbia undergrad does not have many students interested in dentistry. their pre dent society has about 10 people, and even if all of them applies to columbia dental, not everyone wants to go there after all. I think high dat alone is enough to grant you a spot there

I think it was my research experisence that helped me the most since My dat isn't high for Columbia....

Yeah, you had a pretty good package. But, generally, an applicant with a high dat score and average gpa can expect an interview from CU.

I'm sure they look at lots of things, but their enrollees pretty much have the highest dat avgs, along with harvard.

Thanks, as long as I do well on the DAT then I still have a chance. 😀

i received an interview from Colombia that i chose not to attend. I dont have a stellar DAT nor stellar GPA

I went to Columbia undergrad ( go lions!!!), great DAT, decent GPA. etc. accepted, but see below. Point is, people above are right👍

When I said that the class is comprised of famus feeder schools, I don't mean that there are A LOT of those students. But they DO prefer their own students. Go ask for their feeder schools. They'll have around 4-6 students from Columbia undergrad. That's a small portion of the class (being 85) but still, it's significant when you compare all the candidates together. It's just like Temple and the number of kids they get from BYU each year.

Let me clarify this; it's not that they look at stuff like this next to the DAT, they don't. They love high Dats because it rocks their admissions above all. But I'm sure that a student from a Top 20 undergrad would get in more likely than a student at some state college unknown to them with the same stats.

Well... to get in I had to kill a man with a trident and murder a drifter to get his teeth...

And in first year there is I think maybe one person from CU undergrad and 3 from Barnard... And comparing my class to the 2nd years I wouldn't say there are 'feeder' schools. There are schools (like UF) with huge pre-dent societies and tons of talented undergrads that sent i think 2 last year and 2 this year, but hardly a feeder (or at least UF dental wouldn't like to hear that).

I love all these rumorsssss... jeeeeeez

I think CU accepts a fair amount of students from the University of Toronto. I don't know how many of them actually enroll, though. They probably get into Canadian schools and just go to the cheaper place.

If you do not mind me asking, what was your DAT and your GPA?

We have something like 6 UF kids in our class. Crazy pre-dental population at that "other" school in florida 😛

Was actually said from a representative of the admissions by phone. Not that I cared whether or not that was true. When asked what attracted the admissions the most was was the DAT scores, research and big name schools.

lol JB.

yeah we have a huge pre-dental population at UF, our pre-dental ASDA has something like 200 members and the pre-dental club has a decent amount of members as well (although its prob just the same people). Thats just how we do!
