I'm interested in doing Americorp, completed an application, and then did a search.

There SEEMED to be plenty of positions available, but when I called each one the program director all said its very competitive, receiving 30-40 applications for ONE spot in their program!

It seemed harder than getting into medical school!

Anyone with experience applying to Americorps? Did you eventually get accepted into a program?

Easier than TFA....everyone I've known who has wanted AmeriCorps has gotten it. Lots of premeds probably want to do the medically related programs which is why it might seem competitive...broaden your choices (if you haven't already).

That being said I loathe such programs with a passion - http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=837135

Yeah I got rejected from Americorps when I applied a few years ago. Bad economy means more grads are turning to programs like Americorps instead of being unemployed.

I did a 3-month long Americorps stint last summer and didn't find the application process that competitive. I do think the city you apply to do yours in makes all the difference. Not that many young people want to be in the middle of the Midwest during the summertime, after all... 😉

Feel free to PM me if you want application tips or advice in general.

A spectacular applicant friend of mine (went to Hopkins undergrad is going to Ann Arbor next year) got rejected from AmeriCorp. Then again, I know some wildly mediocre people who are working for them too. I think there is a luck element. Also, interview skills are probably big.

I KNOW that a HUGE factor is where you apply to. Boston is a crazy competitive one. Detroit is not. Etc.
