I think it has alot to do with how many people report or complain about your posts. If nobody reports it, then the mods may never really see it. If you are constantly pissing off people and having them report you, then you will be on the mods radar.

^ This

They may see it, however, they won't necessary give you an infraction or ban you. Seems like the way to get banned here is to get one or more persons to lay on the "report post" button. Generally that will annoy the mod enough to slap you with an infraction or ban you. There are people that totally abuse that "report post" fx; yet it seems like only a few mods will discern this or care about it. From their POV, they just don't want to be bothered with the complaints. Easiest thing is to serve up an infraction or ban. The other thing you have to be careful about is if you are on a thread that is strongly used by experienced physicians or residents, who are well-standing here. All it takes on such a thread is for someone to deem you as an annoyance. So, it's like you say minimal or don't visit those threads.

Also, try to avoid arguments with people. No matter how strongly you feel about something or how reasonably or intelligenty you support your position, if one or > people complain, you will be crowned as a troll. Annoying folks just because you differ with them isn't really what defines a troll, but hey, does it matter what they call it when it's their network? Nah. If they say, "Hey, you are a troll and you are trolling," then to them you are a troll.

Boards like this aren't about objectivity, so don't expect it. You just have to get smart and stay out of things, and generally it will be cool. . .but no promises.

The preceeding views do not represent those of the SDN. 😉

It's their network, and they can pretty much do as they please. Way it goes.

Mods just don't go warning or banning people just by looking at reported posts. I'm pretty sure they take all sides into account and those who report inappropriately will also probably be punished. As I read somewhere, it's actually a complicated process in banning someone, and it's not always obvious, such as sporking.

hmm... is there information (like a sticky or something) about how mods go about giving infractions/banning ppl? I'd be really curious to know. Also how does one become a mod anyways?

No that's confidential. You can become a mod by requesting them via pm, and proceed from there, though I heard it's a lot of work

The system on SDN is (I assume) similar to all vBulletin forums:

Whenever someone clicks the "report" post button, a notification is automatically sent to the Mod's private forum.

For each given post that is reported, a brand new "thread" is automatically created by the vBulletin software. The thread will contain the post in question and the "reasoning" of the person that did the complaining (which they type in themselves).

The Mods/Admins will look at this content... the actual post and the complainer's reasoning -- then determine if it is actually out of line or not.

For example, if I reported one of MedPR's posts and my reasoning was simply "he posts too much!" It would be ignored and nothing would happen. If anything, maybe I would be reprimanded for abusing the "report" feature.

On the other hand if I could get MedPR to cuss me out in a post, I report it, and use the reasoning "This kind of behavior does not reflect well on SDN. I came here to learn about admissions, but this poster is mean and discouraging. I hope that he isn't allowed to continue hurting the community."

...MedPR would likely get a warning or infraction.

More often than not, the decision to act (or not) is made collectively. Whoever decides to read a complaint thread can comment and give their opinion on what action should be taken. Typically there is 2 or more people in on the discussion.

I don't believe that Asst Mods can ban/post hold people, so if you make one of them particularly mad, you don't need to worry about "swift retribution" on their end. Sure they might make a solid attempt by getting a higher up to take action, but they cannot do it alone.

However, Senior Mods/Admins can wipe you out in a moment's notice, so it is best to be extra careful to not step on their toes.

Thanks for that information Blais! I appreciate it

Your excessive emoticon use is a blatant violation of the TOS. Definitely reporting this.

Come to think of it, so is this post. Reporting myself as well.

:zip:

We can go to SDN heaven together 😍

Do you believe in SDN reincarnation? Is that a TOS violation? I'd like to think some of my favorite banned users are out there somewhere.

I'm sure many of the banned users are back too.

U Wot M8 is Fivo

If a banned user can return under another username, why bother banning at all? Just put em on extended hold, or limit posts to X posts/day.

Returning to the forums after banning = instaban at next opportunity

Do MODs check the IP address to see if it's the same person?

Yes, but IP verifying can be vague since more than one person can be using the same network area. It depends on the style of writing from the member.

I can't imagine it would be through IP. Maybe through the computer ID or info from a cookie. Since it is a pre-med forum, many freshman live in dorms and they all pretty much have a shared IP address.

This has so many problems. If you have a dynamic IP, all you have to do is reset your router and you have a refreshed IP.

If you have a static IP, all you have to do is reset the modem and it will authenticate under a new IP if you have another hardware (xbox, laptop, desktop) that is using the same IP.

Im sure there is a way around it, but it must be tedious for moderators to do all that work.
I know I would hate to lose my account after I've had it for so long.

Look, that's my two cents, take it or leave it. Just be forewarned. People have gotten infractions and so forth b/c of a person or persons laying on the report post button. It definitely happen.

As far as anything else after that, well, mods are people, and people get interested in perception over reality; since reality seems to take many forms for folks. What are you gonna do?

There are dozens of reasons why things happen, and they don't all have to be fair; b/c life isn't always fair, and discussion-boarding isn't fair.

If you don't own the board, you really don't have much say--unless you know someone that does--or you are a big donor.

Nah, I'm not saying all mods are capricious, or than one mod is capricious all the time. But they are human, and that's life.

OTOH, if they had adroids moderating, I wonder if we'd all be banned??? It would be like that or The Last Days of Pompei. . .lol. . .something like that.

I would not have the strength to move on with my life if I was banned from SDN.
