Hi. I've been told that ADCOMs prefer students in their 4th year of undergrad. I would like to know whether they base this on the number of credits earned or the actual full years that you've been in school. For example, I began school in September 2007 and completed my first year in April 2008. I also took summer classes from May 2008 to August 2008. Then, due to some problems I encountered, I decided to skip this year (September 2008-April 2009). However, I am in summer school currently from May 2009 to August 2009. Beginning September 2009, I will be going back to school once again. I'd like to apply to dental schools next summer. My question then is, since I took classes in 2 summers, will ADCOMs consider this as 1 year (so that by April 2010, I will have completed the equivalent of 3 years), or will they ignore the summers (so that by April 2010, I will have completed the equivalent of 2 years)? Any help is greatly appreciated! tHANKS!

I graduated in three years from my undergrad because I took classes every summer. There is a part of the application that asks if you have already gotten a degree, are planning to get a degree, or if you will not have a degree before dental school. That is what they base it off of. Definitely be honest on that part because they will follow up. They also look at your overall undergrad experience to see if you are a well rounded person or not and if they think you can handle dental school.

Being in your fourth year is irrelevant. They would like for you to be a senior ready to graduate, so that by the time you finish the spring semester, you'll be ready to matriculate into dental school in the fall.

Thats what Im going for. The last thing I want to do is have a year off.
