How do Compression Wraps work?

For some reason I am remembering that ACE bandages (or other compression wraps) help reduce edema even though they increase hydrostatic pressure. Does anyone remember how this works physiologically?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the answer is the bandage increases the hydrostatic pressure of the extravascular fluid more than it increases the intravascular hydrostatic pressure thereby forcing some fluid back into the circulatory system.
