I'm going to graduate as a computer engineer in April 2006 and I'm applying to several dental schools this year.

My question is that how do dental schools look upon engineers?
Are there any particular schools that give a little more preference to engineers?

In my opinion, it's not very easy to get A's in engineering classes, so my GPA is not soaring high. Moreover, i have averaged about 21 credit hours per semester for the last 2 years and that's another reason why i don't have all A's.
I have a science GPA of 3.2/4.00
Overall GPA of 3.35/4.00
Math minor.
I will start a research project of designing a Fiber Optic Circuit activity center to support a space education center this September which will go on for about 1 year.
Will take DAT this July.

In my opinion, we have the skills to be very competitive in all fields of life. I'm sure there will be several different opinions. I would like to hear them please.

Diversity is the name of the game! How many other engineering majors are in the app cycle? Not many, IF any.... SO that makes you stand out. Plus, your GPA is actually pretty good. Its not sky high, but of course they will consider your major. You for sure have a competitive edge. Do well on the DAT and you're there. :luck:

Mention this stuff when writing your personal statement!! Most importantly DO WELL ON THE DAT!!! With that in mind you will be fine!! good luck....

Well, there's at least one other engineer in the cycle this year. But I went to college at 16, without high school physics, precalc, etc., decided I didn't like my classes and partied too much my freshman year...so your GPA rocks compared to mine.

Relax, do well on the DAT. Your GPA is great for engineering, especially with your courseload. I think if you apply to the right schools and stress the courseload, etc. they'll be impressed. 👍

I have computer science major with biology minor. I don't think engineering major will give you any competitive edge but will not hurt you too much either. Make sure you score really high on DAT and don't think about anything else.

I don't think it will give u an advantage considering you are going up against me.... Haha just kidding. Seriously, I think you will be fine, engineering is tough stuff! I was gonna do chemical..

Ouch!

Anyway, dental schools are friendly towards all majors. As other guests have stated do well on the DAT and you'll be fine.

We have business majors, a language major...and even a 40-year old engineer in our class. =P

Doesn't matter what major you are as long as you've fulfilled all the pre-requisite classes and do well on the DAT.

your in dental school, and can probably answer my question. people say there is no real advantage of choosing a science major over a business, engineering, accounting, arts etc. when applying and seeking admission - Okay, I agree.

But does majoring in science, especially biology help a little in dental school? It surely must! I mean I've taken, Histology, biochem, microbio, pharmacology, neurology, vertebrate anatomy, disease and wellness, molecular genetics, bacteriology, virology, and those types of classes, what do you think?

Of course it does.

I would love to answer your question but I am engineer just as you are and plan to take DATS real soon.

..sweet another engineer ! Your 3.3 gpa is preety mighty .. you know how it goes in the engineering world .. "3.0 is good to go" he he .. so you did def above par. I guess I would say your 3.3 eng major = 3.5 - 3.6 liberal major equivalent ...I couldnt confirm though

With their eyes, I would imagine. 😀

PKP719, i think you are right. I get half scholarship for maintaining a GPA above 3.0 in major classes every semester from the EE dept. But this engineering is killing me. I'm taking real time operating sstem design next semester and biochemstry and several other engineering classes.
I hope to get into a good dental school.
What are your stats? (if you don't mind me asking you this).

3.2 in Bio Medical Engineering ..

i could. when i calculated my science GPA (with the majority being the engineering gpa) it was a 3.3. my nonscience (mainly my english courses, and i took many higher level english courses as i was an english minor) was a 3.8. the AVERAGE for most of my engineering classes were set at a C+, for my science classes (like chem, ochem, bio) it was a B-, while i found for my english or history classes the average was set at a B. those are the averages set by the teachers.

vandy_yankee, what dental school will you be going to? What type of engineering did you do as an undergrad? I'm Computer Engineering with a math minor and hopefully a chem minor. Do you mind if i ask you your DAT score?
Thanks fellow engineer and doctor.

I don't know if you guys have applied yet, but I thought I'd mention that AADSAS has broken the GPA's into several categories this year (bio, chem, physics, bcp, and other science). The engineering classes go into 'other science' so it becomes very obvious how much the engineering courses affect your true science GPA. I have to think this might help us out a bit (I hope).

yeah probably 90% of my science classes were engineering classes, my BCP in no way reflects my science GPA. the engineering classes actually raised my science GPA a lot.

With your GPA I doubt it really matters though.

Engineering classes don't effect you BCP GPA directly but indirectly when you are taking 3 engineering electives, a chem class and a bio class and a total of 21 credit hours per semester.
