Found the DO mentoring webpage... gave me a bunch of DO contacts, but I want to shadow a few MDs as well. Is there a similar webpage for MDs? If not, whats the best way to get direct access to these guys without going through all the red tape of big hospitals?

For those unaware: http://www.osteopathic.org/YOM/Mentor_exchange.htm... very useful website

Find the nearest hospital and search by department. I'm sure you'll get a huge list of contacts for the area you want to go into (e.g. emergency medicine, dermatology, etc.) Then e-mail all these doctors and ask if you can shadow them.

Why don't you contact your family doctor or your former pediatrician? They will let you shadow, and you can go from there.

From the contact information around my local hospitals, they usually don't have the physician's emails. 🙁

This might seem a bit stalkerish, but I swear it's effective...

You can guess an email address.

1) Usually if the web address is www.hospitalxyz.com then the email address will end in @hospitalxyz.com. You might be able to find someone else's email address on the website to confirm this ending (such as a webmaster or general contact info box).

2) guess the name combination. John Smith might just be [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected].

3) Pick one and send. If the email gets returned to you as undelivered, then the address was not valid. Try another.

I have successfully contacted doctors for shadowing this way. Asking them directly makes them more likely to say yes. (Chances are they give out their email address to many people and will never question how you came to learn it.) Good luck.

Update: forgot to mention the other method. If the hospital is in academia, often searching the school staff/faculty directory on their website can yield an email address.
