Take the most rigorous cousework available and try to major in chemistry, biology, or biochemistry. Take the MCAT and get a score of 30 or higher. Have a lot of experience with patients and try to do some research.

Hi,
I want to go to a med school in the USA. I've been living in the US for 4 years but I haven't got a green card yet. I can't afford taking premed courses at a University. Do you think my chances of getting into a med school will decrease if I take premed classes at a community college.
thanks a lot

People here would look down on you because they're worried that somebody is getting by with less work (this is false) and some super elite schools might not like it, but in reality, schools recognize that sometimes community colleges are the only option and give equal recognition to the coursework as long as it's accredited and covers the same material as college courses. Just make sure you're taking the highest level coursework.

Why do you want to go to medical school in the United States so badly? Universities your area of the world are just as good. Answer this question so that we'll get an idea of your motivations.

In order to get into an american md school you need at least 1-2 years of premed coursework here in a us undergrad school. I believe this is true of most us medschools.

We only have like ONE medical university to apply to.

We have over 3000 applicants scrambling for about 80 places for a place in medicine. 😱

Thats because many programs outside the US, like in the UK actually prepare students in high school to go directly into a professional program. There are a few MD's and DVM's at my school who are very young because of this.

Pretty much it all comes down to your coursework living up to the standards set forth by the schools you apply to. More importantly, you will need a student visa, otherwise, school's won't even let you apply to ANY program. Although there are many med school's in the US, there are still a lot of people applying for a very limited number of seats, not to mention some schools factor in state of residence. To enhance your chances of getting into a school, and possibly reduce the amount of money you pay for tuition, you may have to live in the US for at least one year prior to even applying.

Certainly not impossible to do it, but you will have a lot more hurdles to overcome which may be better or worse than just applying to the single school in NZ.

InternationalStudent.com contains a wealth of information and is a necessary resources for any one considering applying to school in the US

This gives a lot of general info for internationals:
http://www.essayedge.com/medical/admissions/international/

Just to let you know what you are up against, here is some information from FIU http://www.fiu.edu/~preprofc/International_Students.htm

The number of medical schools that will consider international students is limited. Only approximately 50 out of the 125 M.D. programs in the United States will even consider the application of an international applicant. Most public, state supported schools will not even consider International applicants. Private medical schools may consider international students, but usually are more competitive and more expensive...Check the Medical School Admissions Requirements (MSAR) book as well as the websites for those schools which accept international students.

Due to the fact that US government Federal loans that finance most medical students’ educations are not available to international students, medical schools that accept international students generally require proof that the money required for tuition and fees is set up in advance in an escrow bank account. This policy varies among medical schools, as some require proof of only the first years’ tuition, while some even require that the international students have an account with the full amount equal to 4 years’ tuition and fees.

dont listen to that dude who said that you should major in the hardest major possible. For US med schools, major in something you like and enjoy the ride. Take pre-med classes while you are over there so that when you have to re-take them here you will have already seen that same material.
