I’m a final year undergraduate student, wanting to pursue optometry. I was wondering if you could provide me a few tips in regards to requesting letters of recommendation. I absolutely have no idea how and to ask a professor for an LOR. There have been a few classes where I’ve succeeded academically but it’s been a while since I took their course. I was thinking of asking them after graduation, but then again, I don’t think they would remember me. What do I do if I really haven’t established a relationship with my professors and how do I go about asking them for an LOR. Is it also okay if I wait after graduating college to ask?
I would ask ASAP. I always went and met with them in person but email is ok too.

The best thing to do is to ask early. If you're taking a class and the professor has office hours, go to those and ask questions. You have to step outside of your comfort zone to be a little bit known by your professors. When you ask, I would ask in person, and then follow that in person request up with an e-mail thanking them for writing a letter for you and attaching your CV so that they can see the breadth of your accomplishments and write about them.

This is exactly what I did and it worked well.
